  • Wisdom tooth erupting and hurting as heck. Is that normal?

    Dental - 13 hours ago

    Additional Details

One of my lower wisdom teeth, which have started erupting a while ago is suddenly hurting a lot. The gum around that tooth is sore and swollen. I don't think it is impacted because I had a dental x-ray done a couple years ago and was told that all 4 of my wisdom teeth are growing straight so it isn't necessary to remove them. I also had 4 of my normal back teeth pulled out for braces when I was young so the wisdom teeth have got space to grow. I'm not sure what is causing the pain but I've been told that the pain may be normal during the eruption of wisdom teeth. Will the pain go away after a while? What other reasons apart from impacted teeth can cause such pain? I have my finals coming up in less than a week so I won't be able to go to the dentist and end up with sore cheeks unless it's something persistent and serious. Thanks! That really helped. At least I don't have to worry about getting my tooth removed for the time being. As for taking ibuprofen, is there a recommended dose for this infection in particular?

    Women's Health - 16 hours ago

    Additional Details

My doctor called me yesterday to tell me that my pap test came back, I've had pap tests every 6 months for the past 3 years but didn't make it to my last test in April because I was out of the province, so I went last month. Theres been abnormal cells on all my other tests but now my doctor is sending me to a Gyno because he said that their concerned about the Squamous Cells, I was kinda too nervous to ask questions but he did mention a test that I'm going to have to have he said its like a pap test but with mircoscopes! I have no idea what any of this is, never been to a Gyno, and never heard about half this stuff! Has anyone already been through the same experience? I have no clue when my apt is, just waiting for them to call but it could be a couple months.......I'm 25 years old, with a 3 year old and pretty stressed out right now, I know it doesn't help to stress and my husband tells me not to worry about it but I can't help it, I just need to know stuff! Does anyone know what is gonna go on now? The doctor mentioned a test called a Colopscopy, something about a pap test with a microscope....... My family doctor does alot of the stuff a gyno does, where I live you dont go to a gyno unless referred, My doctor does Pap Tests, delivers babies, and takes care of u while your pregnant right up to delivery.

  • YIKES!! MY PERMANENT REATAINER FELL OUT!?

    Dental - 1 day ago

    Additional Details

So...my lower permanent retainer fell out tonight when I was flossing! I've only had it for a year, but I noticed my teeth have deposits on them. They have started to calcify, and I brush twice a day and floss the lower retainer once a day, along with the rest of my teeth! When I go back to the orthodontist this week, should I just get a removable one, rather than get this one glued back in? I'm thinking I'd get the Hawley or Essix. Which one is better? Keep in mind I have a Hawley upper, no probs with it, except that I take it out for work since people complain about everything (you say coffee weird....take that thing out of your mouth, it's bugging me!). The Hawley isn't that bad, I just don't know whether or not I should get it on the bottom, cause then I will not be able to speak well AT ALL!! LOLz..

Showers: A dirty business?

Dirty showerheads can deliver a face full of harmful bacteria, scientists say.

By Cynthia Ross Cravit, 50Plus.com
Showers: A dirty business?

In the movie Sex and the City germaphobic Charlotte forgets herself and sings in the shower while in Mexico -- accidentally swallowing some bad water -- which to the amusement of her friends, causes her to have a little, uh, 'accident'.

Now scientists say you don't need to be in an exotic location to experience unhealthy side effects of a shower. Recent tests conducted in nine US cities showed that dirty showerheads harbour bacteria called Mycobacterium avium (M.avium), which can cause lung disease.

In the analysis, the levels of M.avium were 100 times higher than those found in typical household water supplies.

"If you are getting a face full of water when you first turn your shower on, that means you are probably getting a particularly high load of Mycobacterium avium, which may not be too healthy," lead researcher Professor Norman Pace from the University of Colorado at Boulder said in a statement.

For the study, published in the National Academy of Science, researchers tested 50 showerheads from nine cities across the country, including New York City, Chicago and Denver. They found that 30 per cent of the devices posed a potential risk.

Showers: a dirty business?

M.avium forms a biofilm that clings to the inside of the showerhead -- which means that hot, relaxing shower can distribute bacteria-filled droplets that are easily inhaled into the deepest parts of the lungs. In the past, showers have also been found to spread other infectious diseases, including a type of pneumonia called Legionnaires' disease and chest infections with a bacterium called Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

These findings may explain why there have been more cases of these lung infections in recent years, linked with people who tend to take more showers and fewer baths, the study authors say.

So is it dangerous to take showers? "Probably not, if your immune system is not compromised in some way," said Pace. "But it's like anything else -- there is a risk associated with it."

Apparently infection is rarely a problem for most healthy people. At higher risk are those with weakened immune systems, like older people, pregnant women or those who are fighting off other diseases.

Symptoms of a lung infection caused by M.avium include fatigue, a persistent, dry cough, shortness of breath and weakness.

What can you do?

So can you clean your showerhead? Professor Pace and his team tried that, but ironically, the effort seems to have made it worse. Cleaning a showerhead with a bleach/chlorine treatment led to a three-fold increase in the bacteria several months later.

He does, however offer this tip: Go with a metal showerhead, since the plastic ones appear to "load up" with bacteria-rich biofilms.

It's also a good idea to let the shower run for a few seconds before stepping in. And, oh, close your eyes -- and forget singing in the shower.

The apparent solution is to run the shower a bit before the water hits your face. This gets rid of the bacteria, and you can shower without worry.

The only and best way to assure a clean shower head people, even if it doesn't bother you, is disinfecting the old 100% true method which we seem as humans to have lost this precious method, soak your shower head in a iodine solution, solution should be red or like the color of beer, if it losses it's color (iodine) then their was to much bacteria on or in your shower head, so put more iodine and if color remains for at least a couple of minutes, then their is no more bacteria PERIOD, end of story! and we can all shower without concern..Their is no bacteria in this entire planet that can resist iodine, but it seems like researhers that know this keep avoiding this simple technique, but it only proves what Einstein said " "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."....

We have enough people out there not bathing or showering. Don't need a story like this panic more individuals to do the same. Just take your shower and go on with your day... There are bigger things than a few bacteria in the water that can kill us...
