  • How can I be confident in myself?

Mental Health - 8 hours ago

    Additional Details

It's a pathetic question, I know. But, seriously. I have two younger brothers who are horrible to me. They will call me fat, talk about tampons, call me ugly, and stupid to my face. It's terrible, and it's really hurting me. Honestly, it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't do it where they do it. I'll be walking to the bus, and they will put down the window and yell in front of EVERYONE, "Hurry up fatty!" Or, "Run, bitch, run!" It's embarrising. How can I stop it form hurting me so much? I have come home crying the past two days, and I'm stuck. I don't know what to do. Please help me :(

  • Do I have the right to insist on starting treatment regardless of what the doctor wants?

    STDs - 9 hours ago

    Additional Details

I've got HIV and Hep C from idu, infected in 2006 diagnosed 2009. My CD4 count is 450 and T8 ratio is .33 unknown VL (they've continually screwed up the tests as results are time-limited and the nearest lab that can handle it is over an hour away) I want to start treatment on HAART immediately as from every study I've read & from talking to people I know who are similarly afflicted that guidelines are about to change at a CD4 count of 500 soon. I live in a rural, conservative area, and the specialist is no different, to her if the book says 350 then treatment should be withheld until it reaches that point,. Knowing how I feel physically and from symptoms that have begun to appear I think it's best to begin right away. Do I have the right to insist on treatment regardless of what she thinks?

  • To the girls who had eating disorders?

    Other - Diseases - 20 hours ago

    Additional Details

Soooo I used to have an eating disorder and i cant seem to get past the whole gaining weight issue. Before i had an eating disorder I was naturally skinny but i still thought i was fat. But now that i've recovered from bulimia nervosa I've gained a lot of weight in my eyes. so now i'm no longer skinny, I'm thin. And to those who have had eating disorders i bet you remember being complimented on being "thin" or "healthy" and considered that as being called fat. Anyway, how can i become more comfortable in my skin, although i still want to lose weight?? For me accepting my body the way it is, is hard......GAAAHHH its kind of annoying because i can look at other girls who are bigger than me and see the beauty in them but not in me....

Listeriosis: 10 ways to protect yourself

Listeriosis: 10 ways to protect yourself

With the recent precautionary recall of nine wiener products by Maple Leaf Foods, Listeriosis is once again in the news, bringing back memories of the serious outbreak of summer 2008.

The safety of our food continues to be a concern, with food-borne illnesses affecting up to 13 million Canadians, or more than 40 per cent of the population, each year according to public health experts.

Listeriosis, considered to be more severe than other forms of food poisoning, can cause brain damage and even death. It is caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes (commonly known as Listeria), which is found in soil, vegetation, water, sewage and the feces of animals and humans.

Symptoms often severe

Symptoms of an infection are often more severe than other forms of food poisoning and can include nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, headache, constipation, and persistent fever. If it spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may also include severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. After eating contaminated food, symptoms usually appear within two to 30 days, but can take as long as 90 days.

Listeria is more likely to cause death than other bacteria that cause food poisoning. In fact, 20 to 30 per cent of food-borne Listeriosis infections in high-risk individuals may be fatal, according to Health Canada.

Those most at risk are people of advanced age, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems, such as chemotherapy or organ transplant patients.

10 ways to protect yourself

Reduce your risk of contracting Listeriosis (as well as other food-borne illnesses) by following these 10 steps.

- Read and follow all package labels and instructions on food preparation and storage.

- After handling foods, especially raw foods such as meat and fish, thoroughly clean and sanitize all surfaces used for food preparation with a kitchen sanitizer or a bleach solution (5 ml household bleach to 750 ml of water), and rinse with water.

- To avoid cross-contamination, clean all knives, cutting boards and utensils used with raw food before using them again.

- Thoroughly clean fruits and vegetables before you eat them. (See Keep healthy foods healthy.)

- Refrigerate or freeze perishable food, prepared food and leftovers within two hours.

- Defrost food in the refrigerator, in cold water or in the microwave, but never at room temperature.

- Keep leftovers for a maximum of four days only and reheat them to an internal temperature of 74°C (165°F) before eating them.

- Check the temperature in your refrigerator using a thermometer to make sure it is at 4°C (40°F) or below. As the storage temperature increases, so does the growth of Listeria in foods.

- Frequently wash and disinfect the refrigerator. This will make it less likely for Listeria to be transferred from contaminated food and surfaces to non-contaminated foods.

- Avoid certain foods (see below) or heat them to reduce your risk.

Unlike most bacteria, Listeria can survive and grow on foods being stored in the refrigerator -- but it can be killed off by using proper cooking techniques. Note: Foods that are contaminated with Listeria look, smell and taste normal.

Makes one wonder if the population is suffering from swine flu, or perhaps just reactions from eating putrid food. This is just another example of why we should turn our backs to mass production food and return to the small local operator who would have long been put out of business. Recently advised our famous soup company of some putrid condensed onion soup. Not even a "sorry", just a note to offer me a coupon to buy another can of it. Screw you...it's the last time I buy these products!
