Beat-the-heat Fitness Tips

Don't let hot temperatures and humidity throw off your fitness goals

Here are some easy tips to help you stay active and cool while working out in the summer.

  1. Stay hydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of water, especially while working out, even if you don't feel thirsty. Staying hydrated not only helps your body by replenishing fluids lost through sweating, it also helps to cool your body temperature.
  2. Don't exercise during peak temperature times. Plan to do all outdoor exercise, such as jogging, in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are generally cooler.
  3. Wear sunscreen. If you're working out during daylight hours be sure to wear sunscreen, preferably a sport version so that it won't sweat off.
  4. Try something new. Too hot to run or blade? Hit the local pool or beach for a water workout. Make it even more fun and invite friends along for water volleyball or join an aquafit class.
  5. Dress appropriately. Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing that breathes and allows sweat to escape.
  6. Take it easy. Remember to listen to your body. Don't push yourself too hard when temperatures are high. Be aware of the warning signs for heat stroke and exhaustion, such as: headache, muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness and trouble breathing.
  7. Work out indoors. When temperatures are too high to work out outside be sure to have an indoor option. Hit the gym, take a class or buy a DVD and exercise in your air-conditioned living room. And if you can't find a cool place? Just take the opportunity to give your body a rest.
