Cereal bars are a quick and easy snack for whenever a hunger pang hits you. However, some are healthier than others, so it’s important to make the choice that is right for you and your waistline. Divine.ca tested six different products to help guide you the next time you’re perusing the grocery store aisles.

Smart choices

Leclerc 100 calorie bars
(Apricot flavour)
Calories:
100
Fat:
2.5 g
Sugars:
18 g
Sodium:
60 mg
Protein:
1 g

The main ingredient in these bars is whole wheat and they’re made with whole grains, as well. The raspberry and vanilla bars are our favourite, as they are delicious and have the least amount of sodium. The caloric content is also very reasonable, as is the amount of sugar.

Blue Menu bars from President’s Choice
(Apple and Almond flavour)

Calories:
130
Fat:
2.5 g
Sugars:
25 g
Sodium
: 90 mg
Protein:
3 g

These bars are a great source of fibre, with 5 grams per bar. Their apple and cinnamon flavour is overall delicious, but a little too sweet given the 25 grams of sugar. However, their protein levels are high for a low amount of calories.

Nature Valley Trail Mix (Fruit and Nut flavour)

Calories: 140
Fat: 4 g
Sugar: 25 g
Sodium: 95 mg
Protein: 3 g

These trail mix bars combine nuts and dried fruit, making them the perfect choice for those in need of an energy boost, with 3 grams of protein. Perfect to have after long walks or workouts. The rub? They’re high in both salt and sugar

Triple Berry Chewy Muesli Bars by Compliments

Calories: 110
Fat: 1.5 g
Sugar: 23 g
Sodium: 50 mg
Protein: 2 g

Rich in fibre (3 grams), these bars are a great source of energy (2 grams of protein) and have very few grams of fat. Very fruity and delicious and, by far, the healthiest bar we taste-tested!

Disappointing choices

Sweet and Salty Chewy Nut Bars by President’s Choice
(Cashew flavour)

Calories: 160
Fat: 7 g
Sugar: 22 g
Sodium: 115 mg
Protein: 3 g

These bars have more fat content than any of the other bars we tried, in large part due to the cashews. Their salt content is also very high, but they contain 3 grams of protein. An interesting taste, but only for those who enjoy putting sweet and salty together.

All-Bran Cereal Bars (Original flavour)

Calories: 130
Fat: 6 g
Sugar: 20 g
Sodium: 85 mg
Protein: 2 g

These bars contain a good amount of fibre (4 g per bar), but they also have a large amount of fat. Although bland (could have used a fruit filling), they are still tasty. All-Bran cereal is a better—and healthier—alternative to these bars made with white flour.
