Headache Helpers

4 easy things you can do to face a migraine head on.

By Sandy Cordeiro

1. Mint Magic,br>Applied topically to the forehead and temples, peppermint oil may reduce headache symptoms. The tingling sensation you feel is likely the result of blood vessels relaxing. It also relaxes tight muscles in the head and neck, which are commonly associated with tension headaches. For a little pampering on the side, give yourself a head massage with shampoo or conditioner infused with peppermint extract.

2. Good Scents
Any migraine sufferer caught in the perfume department during an attack understands that certain scents can aggravate headaches. But can the opposite also be true? Doctors at the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago found the scent of green apple can reduce the severity of migraines. Try an apple-scented candle or fresh juice to help chase the pain away.

3. Stretch Solution
When you feel a headache coming on, the calming stretches, concentrated breathing and relaxing meditation of yoga can help. It may help reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines by calming the nervous system. Be careful not to overdo it, as heavy exercise can actually exacerbate symptoms. Stick to gentle stretches and skip ashtanga class. Also avoid inversion poses like downward dog, where your heart is raised above your head.

4. The Right Stuff
Spinach is rich in magnesium and calcium, both thought to be headache fighters. Studies show that many migraine sufferers have low levels of magnesium in their bodies, especially right before and during an episode. This can affect serotonin performance and constrict arteries, both possible headache causes. Calcium may also ease the headaches that plague women during that time of the month.
