  • Wisdom tooth erupting and hurting as heck. Is that normal?

    Dental - 12 hours ago

    Additional Details

One of my lower wisdom teeth, which have started erupting a while ago is suddenly hurting a lot. The gum around that tooth is sore and swollen. I don't think it is impacted because I had a dental x-ray done a couple years ago and was told that all 4 of my wisdom teeth are growing straight so it isn't necessary to remove them. I also had 4 of my normal back teeth pulled out for braces when I was young so the wisdom teeth have got space to grow. I'm not sure what is causing the pain but I've been told that the pain may be normal during the eruption of wisdom teeth. Will the pain go away after a while? What other reasons apart from impacted teeth can cause such pain? I have my finals coming up in less than a week so I won't be able to go to the dentist and end up with sore cheeks unless it's something persistent and serious. Thanks! That really helped. At least I don't have to worry about getting my tooth removed for the time being. As for taking ibuprofen, is there a recommended dose for this infection in particular?

    Women's Health - 16 hours ago

    Additional Details

My doctor called me yesterday to tell me that my pap test came back, I've had pap tests every 6 months for the past 3 years but didn't make it to my last test in April because I was out of the province, so I went last month. Theres been abnormal cells on all my other tests but now my doctor is sending me to a Gyno because he said that their concerned about the Squamous Cells, I was kinda too nervous to ask questions but he did mention a test that I'm going to have to have he said its like a pap test but with mircoscopes! I have no idea what any of this is, never been to a Gyno, and never heard about half this stuff! Has anyone already been through the same experience? I have no clue when my apt is, just waiting for them to call but it could be a couple months.......I'm 25 years old, with a 3 year old and pretty stressed out right now, I know it doesn't help to stress and my husband tells me not to worry about it but I can't help it, I just need to know stuff! Does anyone know what is gonna go on now? The doctor mentioned a test called a Colopscopy, something about a pap test with a microscope....... My family doctor does alot of the stuff a gyno does, where I live you dont go to a gyno unless referred, My doctor does Pap Tests, delivers babies, and takes care of u while your pregnant right up to delivery.

  • YIKES!! MY PERMANENT REATAINER FELL OUT!?

    Dental - 1 day ago

    Additional Details

So...my lower permanent retainer fell out tonight when I was flossing! I've only had it for a year, but I noticed my teeth have deposits on them. They have started to calcify, and I brush twice a day and floss the lower retainer once a day, along with the rest of my teeth! When I go back to the orthodontist this week, should I just get a removable one, rather than get this one glued back in? I'm thinking I'd get the Hawley or Essix. Which one is better? Keep in mind I have a Hawley upper, no probs with it, except that I take it out for work since people complain about everything (you say coffee weird....take that thing out of your mouth, it's bugging me!). The Hawley isn't that bad, I just don't know whether or not I should get it on the bottom, cause then I will not be able to speak well AT ALL!! LOLz..

Five ways to de-stress at work

On top of the daily stresses of work, you may have been facing additional worries lately with the economic downturn. News of employee layoffs, salary and hiring freezes and increasing workloads might be piling on the stress.

On top of the daily stresses of work, you may have been facing additional worries lately with the economic downturn. News of employee layoffs, salary and hiring freezes and increasing workloads might be piling on the stress. If your life is full of stress, it can be difficult to lead a healthy lifestyle. Instead of being physically active to relieve stress, some people respond by overeating, eating unhealthy foods, consuming too much alcohol or smoking – reactions that can increase the risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Recent research from the American Journal of Epidemiology has found that people who already have a high body mass index (BMI) may experience additional weight gain if they report stress from personal relationships, work, life constraints or finances. But there are ways to cope in your workplace and at home to help you stay calm throughout your day.

Dr. Brian Baker, a Heart and Stroke Foundation researcher and specialist on the health effects of stress, says that job strain basically comes down to two definitions: either there are too many demands with too little control over your work or there is too much effort compared to the rewards you get back. With that in mind, he shares some of his top tips for making work as stress-free as possible.

  1. Keep an open dialogue with your manager or employer. Dr. Baker says that it can be stressful if you have a bad relationship with your boss or don't feel comfortable voicing concerns. "When a supervisor is riding someone and giving that person a hard time, that employee can start to freeze up and get anxious at his or her workplace," he says. "But most employers want their employees to be happy. It leads to better productivity and a more positive workplace." He suggests trying to speak to the person above you to try to develop more flexibility in your job demands. "Assertiveness is a very important skill. Use a logical but firm approach and be polite. You can't offend the people in charge of you, but you can stay calm, ask for a slight adjustment in workload – just don't be aggressive."
  2. Get support from co-workers. Whether you are asking for help with your workload or simply want someone to relax with at lunch time, co-workers may lend a hand to lessen your stress. "It helps to have a support network – especially if you find yourself sensitive to social stresses. This can be support from colleagues, supervisors or friends at the office," Dr. Baker says.
  3. Make use of employee health programs. If your company partially or completely covers the cost of a counsellor or massage therapist in its benefits program, take advantage it. You may also want to check into your benefits plan or ask Human Resources if employee counselling programs for stress or debt management are available.
  4. Talk to your spouse or friends outside the office to gain additional support. Gossiping about office politics is not helpful. Instead, discuss your problems with your best friend, family or spouse to avoid consequences. In fact, a study from Heart and Stroke Foundation researchers Dr. Sheldon Tobe and Dr. Baker has shown that supportive marriages are key. "We found that people who had a supportive spouse at home were more immune to the effects of job strain overall," Dr. Tobe says. In particular, they found that women are less likely to experience the blood-pressure-raising effects of a stressful job when their spouses were supportive. Other studies have found that men also benefit from the stress-reducing benefits of marriage, whether or not they rate it as a good marriage. Support of friends or family members can also reduce stress.
  5. Look for the rewards in your work. When work is stressful, it can be challenging to see the positive. But Dr. Baker says it's really helpful if you can focus on the other benefits from your job besides a paycheque. "You need a balance between the effort you put into work and the rewards you get back," he says. So, look for ways that your work rewards you. Do you learn something new every day? Do you use it as a way to make new friends? Do you help people with the work you do? Take advantage of social situations at work and try to focus on the parts that make you happy.

In extreme cases of job strain, getting a new job may be the best solution, but in the meantime, Dr. Baker says, you still have to get the job done so you just need to find the ways that make your situation the best it can be. "Maybe you can get in early, leave early and avoid people who cause problems or you can try relaxation techniques like meditation. If you've been really bothered, talk to your doctor if the stress is becoming overwhelming."

a lot of good points made here. Funny after ALL the hr and industrial psychology it comes down to the fight between Capitalism vs Socialism. Norway, Sweden, Finland are still standards for "social-democratic" countries. North America better get it's act together and clean-up the corruption or we'll end up no better than "developing" nations we've been trying to help? Wal-mart Nation is not working! And the work environments it fosters

Yes, there are some employers that want you happy so you can produce 150% ...but most of employers, especially young ones, just want to see you fail and don't want to see you happy and give you an extremely hard time at work.......Please give me the companies where they want to keep you happy !!!!!

It's also the massive amount of radiation you are exposed to that's killing you - just touch your liveless hair after 8 hours in office. Office work is the most ridiculous type of work. It pays next to nothing and you process massive amounts of crap that makes absolutely no difference to you. So how can you be happy? You are wasting your days for month-to-month paycheck and get this - it's reducing your lifetime by probably 10-15 years. If this is a fact and I'm pretty sure it is, aren't these jobs worth a lot more in terms of wages? Umm, no because CEO must get his bonuses. Just sing "Killing me slowly" and "Dont worry, be happy." Capitalism, a love story.

If you notice a family member is showing stress, pls step-in right away and give your support before it's too late. My sister worked in the goverment and fought for public officials corruption fearlessly. She was very bright, academic scholar, young, very beautiful but very unfortunate to have a very insecure irresponsible husband who was always comparing his achievements against my sister. He forgot that marriage is a team work and not a competition from wife and husband. My sister never complained about being a bread winner. Her husband became abusive physicaly, emotinally, mentally. On her job, the President and Vice president and at least three of Dept Managers of that gov't office were stealing money from the taxpayers. She tried her best to make everything right but she lost. She died for unknown cause. I think its because of too much stress and lack of support fomr the family. Her husband took the benefits and insurance money plus all of her assests, her co-gov;t officials continued to steal. Pls let us fight work place abuse and domestic abuse.

I am currently in a stressful job situation. My boss has singled me out and I am being scrutined each day...all day. To make a long story short, I came back to work after being away for 5 weeks from suffering a staph A infection in my foot and ankle which required heavy duty antibiotics intravenously and I had to stay off of my feet. I came back to work and she has told me that since I have been away, I must regain the trust of those around me....what's that about? I am a consistent worker, reliable etc... Now, I constantly have to look over my shoulder and it's very stressful. I am looking for other work but it's not easy either. Suggestions?

I guess this all really supports the argument that self-employment is the way to go. Who really wants to have to answer to someone for their economic well being? That really blows.

At the workplace you have to be your own doctor, before you consult anyone else, since the stroke at work or working stroke when it strikes is timless.
