PARIS - French President Nicolas Sarkozy is calling for a "revolution" in the way economic growth is measured so that happiness and well-being can be included in measurements.
The head of a country known for its wine, cheese and long holidays asked two Nobel economists to study new ways of measuring economic progress.
The resulting report by U.S. economist Joseph Stiglitz and Armatya Sen of India was delivered to Sarkozy on Monday. It recommends shifting the emphasis from gross domestic product, which measures economic production, to well-being and sustainability.
Sarkozy said Monday that the financial and economic crisis has highlighted the need to change traditional ways of measuring growth and France will adapt its statistical toolbox.
