  • Can over working a muscle fail to show results such as mass or definition?

    Diet & Fitness - 12 hours ago

    Additional Details

I'm just wondering because i went to the gym today, did back and biceps. and for biceps i did 3 sets of 8 reps standing curls, 3 sets of 8 reps preacher hammer curls, seated curls, 3 sets 8 reps, than i did preacher curls 3 sets 8 reps than finally i did normal hammer curls. also 3 sets of 8 reps. was that over doing it? and can overdoing it fail to gain muscle mass/definition? Okay, yes I was seriously asking. I weigh 132 lbs, I'm 15. I was using, 35's at first and I went as low as 20's for some things. And my calorie intake was pretty good today, I had a protein shake after my workout too.

  • Wisdom tooth erupting and hurting as heck. Is that normal?

    Dental - 17 hours ago

    Additional Details

One of my lower wisdom teeth, which have started erupting a while ago is suddenly hurting a lot. The gum around that tooth is sore and swollen. I don't think it is impacted because I had a dental x-ray done a couple years ago and was told that all 4 of my wisdom teeth are growing straight so it isn't necessary to remove them. I also had 4 of my normal back teeth pulled out for braces when I was young so the wisdom teeth have got space to grow. I'm not sure what is causing the pain but I've been told that the pain may be normal during the eruption of wisdom teeth. Will the pain go away after a while? What other reasons apart from impacted teeth can cause such pain? I have my finals coming up in less than a week so I won't be able to go to the dentist and end up with sore cheeks unless it's something persistent and serious. Thanks! That really helped. At least I don't have to worry about getting my tooth removed for the time being. As for taking ibuprofen, is there a recommended dose for this infection in particular?

    Women's Health - 21 hours ago

    Additional Details

My doctor called me yesterday to tell me that my pap test came back, I've had pap tests every 6 months for the past 3 years but didn't make it to my last test in April because I was out of the province, so I went last month. Theres been abnormal cells on all my other tests but now my doctor is sending me to a Gyno because he said that their concerned about the Squamous Cells, I was kinda too nervous to ask questions but he did mention a test that I'm going to have to have he said its like a pap test but with mircoscopes! I have no idea what any of this is, never been to a Gyno, and never heard about half this stuff! Has anyone already been through the same experience? I have no clue when my apt is, just waiting for them to call but it could be a couple months.......I'm 25 years old, with a 3 year old and pretty stressed out right now, I know it doesn't help to stress and my husband tells me not to worry about it but I can't help it, I just need to know stuff! Does anyone know what is gonna go on now? The doctor mentioned a test called a Colopscopy, something about a pap test with a microscope....... My family doctor does alot of the stuff a gyno does, where I live you dont go to a gyno unless referred, My doctor does Pap Tests, delivers babies, and takes care of u while your pregnant right up to delivery.

Sick of feeling tired?

Six ways to boost energy, beat fatigue and feel younger.

Sick of feeling tired?

Feeling worn down? Constantly exhausted? You aren't alone. In fact, according to health experts, a 'lack of energy' is one of the top five complaints doctors face. And it is a complaint that Western medicine all too often fails to treat.

"I discovered that I couldn't help about 70 per cent of my patients," says Dr. Woodson Merrell, author of The Source: Beat Fatigue, Power Up Your Health, and Feel 10 Years Younger . "They weren't sick, but they weren't well either."

Speaking at CARP's A New Vision of Aging Conference in Toronto, Dr. Merrell said there were six steps that can break the fatigue cycle and lead to better heath and improved longevity. These steps draw on both Western medical knowledge and Eastern healing practices.

East meets West

A prominent integrative medicine specialist, Dr. Merrell is the rare practitioner who gives medical advice that is a combination of traditional and alternative.

The chairman of integrative medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and a professor at Columbia University, Merrill received conventional medical training - but because he believes that Western medicine doesn't necessarily have all the answers, he is also licensed in acupuncture and trained in nutrition, botanical medicine and homeopathy.

Merrill takes a holistic approach to healing with an emphasis on prevention. In many cases, he says, intervention on a timely basis would mean, for one, that we wouldn't need so many pharmaceuticals. Integrative medicine, he says, looks for the safest and most gentle remedy.

Holistic medicine can be traced back to Indigenous cultures dating back thousands of years. It also embraces more recent therapies including vitamin supplements and acupuncture.

Where's the science?

While integrative medicine has largely been a consumer-driven movement, in the last 10-15 years, there has been good science to support many of the treatments, Merrell says.

In an effort to bring alternative practices into the mainstream medical system, Merrell teaches the science behind these therapies. He says he carefully scrutinizes any studies on the performance of natural remedies: "You have to look at the quality of the studies. We look for the gold standard, the same that is used for traditional medical studies."

As a result of research supporting alternative remedies, about one third of US medical schools have joined the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrated Medicine, including such prominent institutions such as Yale, Harvard and John Hopkins. (Canadian universities who have joined the initiative include McMaster and Laval.)

"This is huge," Merrell says, adding that it marks a turning point. "Academic medicine has come to see the value in integrated medicine."

6 steps to energy creation

So how can Merrell's approach help you to beat fatigue?

"There are simple things you can do to increase your energy," he says. "Much of it isn't rocket science, and in fact, may remind you of the advice your grandmother gave you. It's easy to say and understand... but not always easy to incorporate into your life."
