  • Why do my hips ache from standing, and 'pop' when I walk.?

Pain & Pain Management - 14 hours ago

    Additional Details

I stand for about two hours at a time and my hips just start to ache really bad, sometimes my knees too. I have decent support in my shoes. I do sometimes have a problem too when I walk, my hips almost 'pop' but not 'crack', kinda like the pop out of joint a little or something but it only starts to ache after about 15 mins of walking like that. Sometimes I can make it stop if I walk differently (stiff-like). I am only 23 and this has been happening for quite a few years, since I was 16 probably. Should I be concerned? Is there any certain vitamins or supplements I can eat more of or take to help with this? I haven't had any injuries in the past that I know of that could have caused this.

I live in a rural, conservative area, and the specialist is no different, to her if the book says 350 then treatment should be withheld until it reaches that point,. More plus-size people on TV; plus-size fans aren't sure it's always a good thing

More plus-size people on TV; plus-size fans aren't sure it's always a good thing

RALEIGH, N.C. - Ask model and fashion designer Emme whether television and other media are more accepting of plus-size people, and she quickly corrects you.

"Average women," she says.

The host of the new Fox reality dating show, "More to Love," has been on this campaign since the mid-1990s, when she began telling full-size women to be more accepting of themselves. In her latest venture, she guides a 6-foot-3, 330-pound man as he chooses among 20 women who wear sizes ranging from 14 to 22.

Television is suddenly filled with images of full-figured people - real and fictional - although not as everyday people just living their lives. The shows focus on their size - on "More to Love," the contestants' height and weight, and that of the bachelor, were flashed on the screen as they were introduced in the first episode.

Oxygen's "Dance Your Ass Off" features 12 contestants, weighing a total of 3,000 pounds, who lose weight through dancing, and Lifetime's "Drop Dead Diva" is about a model-wannabe who dies and comes back as a plus-size attorney.

The Style Network's reality show "Ruby" is in its second season, telling the story of Ruby Gettinger of Savannah, Ga., who's down to 350 pounds from her highest weight of 716.

"I think these welcomed shows are opening the aperture" on full-size women, said Emme, whose size ranges from a 12-14 to a 14-16. "These are fun shows to watch, and they are really taking the perspective of the full-sized woman and bringing it into the type of package people can relate to."

Some fashion magazines are ahead of the curve - so to speak - on featuring plus-size models. Glamour became serious about it in the past five years, featuring Queen Latifah on the cover in May 2004, said Cindi Leive, the magazine's executive editor. In the past six to 12 months, "there is just more and more of a hunger among women to see images of women that look and feel real."

"There's a sense that being a sort of cookie cutter, homogenous standard of what's beautiful has started to feel a little bit dated," Leive said.

But the reaction to the 8-by-8-centimetre photograph on page 194 of the September issue surprised even Leive. "I am gasping with delight," one reader wrote. "I love the woman on p 194," someone else wrote.

Model Lizzi Miller, a 20-year-old who wears a size 12-14, is shown in sideways pose, her arms covering her breasts, only the string of a string bikini visible at the waist. The shocker: Her belly hangs over the string and rests just a bit on her thighs. Not only that, but she's laughing AS IF SHE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW.

"There's a roll in her belly that looks like every woman over the age of 16," Leive said. "And there she is, looking happy and confident and like she loves life and like she's the sexiest thing in the world."

If people do relate to the shows - and Fox hasn't decided whether to renew "More to Love" - it may be because they reflect the image that Americans see in mirror. The average U.S. woman wears a size 14, and an estimated 56 per cent of American women wear plus sizes, which start at size 14 or 16, depending on the brand.

But not everyone is getting on the curves-are-better wagon train. Who can forget the uproar about Jessica Simpson, whose true crime was one of fashion - wearing unattractive, high-waisted jeans? Or Jennifer Love Hewitt defending her bikini look with words that never should have to be uttered - "A size 2 is not fat!"

Have had my thryroid and other things tested results always come back normal. So it's not my thyroid. I am measuring my portions and believe 1600 to 1800 calories a day isn't that much food it's quite normal portions in terms of recommended servings for the different food groups. According to websites I've checked at my current weight I should be eating close to 3000 calories a day to maintain, I don't ever eat that much and probably never have, I'm half of that and still not losing weight so something is awry if it's not my thyroid, but not sure what it is and neither does my doctor. Anyhow... trying to increase activity little by little and don't think lowering my calories any more would be healthy. I never eat mindlessly. I know about false hunger and that's why I eat about every 3 to 4 hours to maintain metabolism levels and so that I'm not hungry or starving. I eat plenty of fibre filled foods and cook my meat in broth or water instead of frying, I steam or grill my veggies and I don't use much margarine if at all, maybe a couple times a week. I eat low fat dairy or fat free dairy, I don't use much in the way of sauces. My food prep is very clean in terms of not using a lot of additives, I rarely use salt but love spices and have pretty much eliminated most un healthy drinks. I may have an occaisional soda but I never was one to drink one every day anyhow. I prefer fruit over fruit juice, I only indulge perhaps once or twice a week on meals at my boyfriend's place because as understanding as he is, he doesn't need to be as restricted as I do with his foods. I don't expect him to change everything in his place just for me,for one meal, though he buys skim milk for me and doesn't cook with salt but that is about all he changes for me.

Well Jonny I wasn't meaning to direct it at you but you said in your post that you weren't directing your post at me personally but it sort of felt like it. I have found that 30 minutes is good but I do need to slowly increase that. I don't always have 5 hours between the time I get home and when I'd like to be in bed asleep. It depends on the public transit, not the most reliable on some days. Sometimes I only have 3 or 4 but as I think I mentioned to workout while watching tv. It's being on the computer at home I have to break the habit of. I run a couple of Yahoo groups and being a moderator and posting does take up some of that time when I'm at home, researching articles to post as well. Plus believe me, cooking isn't as quick as some think it is, even if most of the stuff is made ahead of time. I packed 5 lunches yesterday and it took 60 minutes including cooking time and dishes and clean up. I find 30 minutes of exercise isnt' enough even if it's every day for me to lose weight. Or at least that's what I've seen so far. I am going to find ways of increasing activity and am making more changes again over the next few weeks and see what happens.

Sonia H: Obesity does have a set of rules that got you there; it's called chemistry and the laws of physics. It sounds like you have had a pretty rough go of it though, with a thyroid problem and other injuries. Ignoring hunger is tough, but if you know you've eaten enough, you need to realize it's a false hunger, and fight the urge. To gain 200 pounds in 2 months you would have had to eat 200 pounds of food and not go to the bathroom (and that is ignoring anything to do with calories). Kimberley: I'm not sure why you directed your post at me, but good work on losing 50 pounds. I think using a calorie tracker is the best thing for losing weight, because then you know exactly what's going on and can adjust as needed. 5 hours is lots of time for a 1/2 hour of exercise. You don't need to get up a 2am. When you get home step up and down on something and get the pulse up for a while. If you're still stuck at the plateau, increase the effort or decrease the food. Personally, I've been overweight many times. I lose weight, and then I enjoy dining out and gain weight. Calories in and Calories burned are the bottom line. The most I gained before losing it was 30 pounds. To lose it I did zero exercise and only ate 1100 calories a day. Some exercise and more food would have been healthier, but I was at school for 16 hours a day, and kind of lazy. I pay very close attention to what people around me eat, what they do for exercise, and their weight. I have never met someone yet who defied physics.

I would like to add that I work for a lead generation/telemarketing company and depending on the contract sometimes I work as early as 6 to 2 sometimes I work later, so I'm never the same shift, that is hard to adjust to but like I said... going to start working out while watching tv, sort of doing step aerobics moves on my step bench and doing some weights and such now that the weather is changing, when the weather is nice will try to get out on my bike but since am not use to it, 15 minutes is about my limit because am not use to riding, can we say sore crotch??? LOL no seriously, anyway that's my story and I'm sticking to it....

to Jonny O I use to live on fast food as a convenient thing. I've always cooked and when I was not dating my current boyfriend I wouldn't cook very much for myself, but didnt' eat at McDonald's it was more picking up a sandwich,or soup & salad at the deli. Now I make those myself. I don't hike and all that daily. I don't do yoga daily. I belong to SparkPeople and keep track of what I eat on there so I know I'm within the 1600-1800 calorie range because I've been following their meal plan for a few weeks now. I've just not been as active as I've liked to be because my work schedule has not been very regular, the hours change from week to week and so I haven't been able to workout regularly. I was 330 pounds,am now 280,have kept that off for over 2 years. I'm just at a plateau due to lack of activity. That's changing though am embarking on a new idea.Toworkout while watching the shows I've taped during the week or workout while watching tv, !!! We don't eat out every week because we stay home most weekens, we dont' go out much now except maybe a bit of shopping sometimes ,that's probably once a month, probably less, more like every couple of months, one Saturday a month. We might go to Wendy's I get a salad and a chili, sometimes I might get a burger. I don't eat like that all the time. I haven't been hiking in months because we dont' have a car to go camping, I just bought a bike and haven't ridden a bike in over 20 years (no room to store one until now) so am just getting use to riding again. I'm just learning yoga and am trying to figure out how to fit this all in with working an 8 hour day plus 1 hour each way travel to and from work and other things I need. I get up at 4 am to leave at 5 for work, start at 6 get home maybe by 3 and try to be in bed about 8pm 5 hours goes by pretty fast and I am not getting up at 2 am to workout,it would wake my landlady upstairs. I have to learn to prioritize beter, make meals ahead etc. I never know what shift I'm working.

Being Obese has no set rules of how you may have gotten there. I am obese and well proportioned. For me personally I did not gain weight by hoarding food in my mouth. I was sixteen when I gained 200 lbs in 2 months due to thyroid condition, that was not discovered until I was 18!! I've also had 3 back surgeries and can not exercise as I would like, I have a very hard time walking as fluid will build up and prevent me from walking and cause excrutiating pain, so it is very difficult to lose weight and with thyroid problems you have to work out twice as much to burn a normal amount of calories. I follow a strict healthy diet and exercise as much as possible. There are so many other factors besides eating that can make a person gain weight such as stress and physical injuries! As for "More to Love", I completely agree that most of the women on there portray plus sized women as emotional wrecks; however most of the feelings are true for oversized women and it does somewhat provide "the life of a plus sized woman"...and that is beyond a size 18. I never went to prom, always organized it, never dated until my 20's, and the selection wasn't the greatest. Now in my 30's, along with my disability I wonder if I will ever find someone decent, so it's nice to see even if it is just entertainment that some "fat girl" is getting some good attention. Treat others as you want to be treated and Remember people it is entertainment!!!

I agree with Wilomica DO NOT PROMOTE UNHEALTHY! I am not perfect myself ,I'm 5'10" ,190Lbs but when you look at the health problems today it has gotten ALOT worse since most of the population is heavily overweight! in the last 20 years diabetes, heart problems,cancer,A.D.D, autism and bone disorders have all went off the scale and the major changes in our everyday life have been : overweight and obesity, processed foods and added chemicals in everything we eat and wash ourselves with. It doesn't take a rocket-scientist to figure out whats going on!

Rhiannon, I don't want to pick on you personally, but you sound like a perfect example of every one of the many overweight people I know. You first say you haven't eaten fast food in years, then you say you and your boyfriend quit a few months ago, then you say you go every few months. I'm not saying you're a liar, but I don't think you really know what you are putting in your mouth. If you are intaking 1800 cal a day average, and you are burning a few hundred calories a day with your yoga, hiking, swimming, etc., you are either a small person, or you are wrong about your calories. Keep track of everything for a month, and average it. Include EVERYTHING: drinks, snacks, sauces, dining out, everything. You also say you don't have time for 2 -3 hours of exercise a day, but it looks like you do have exactly that, but you only need around 1/2 hour for a good-for-your-heart workout. If you're happy, and you don't know you will go through cycles of happy and miserable about your weight, then good for you. A 600+ calorie deficit is hard work to do everyday for a long enough time to lose weight, but please everyone at least maintain the fitness you have now. Maintaining is much easier than losing.

I think people confuse weight with health. I don't care what size you are, if you live a healthy lifestyle, that's what matters. Size 14 people can be healthier than stick figures.
