Top diet myths exposed

Myth 1: Potatoes and bread are fattening.

Actually: It's just the opposite. Starchy vegetables and bread (whole-grain bread, that is) are quality carbs needed to fuel every part of you, from your brain to your muscles. Where you can get into trouble is how you eat them: Smear butter on a slice of whole wheat bread or deep-fry potatoes and you can double, triple, or quadruple their calories.

Myth 2: Drinking a glass of water before a meal curbs appetite.

Actually: Yes and no. Water tames appetite if it's incorporated into food, such as soup or a thick drink (think V8 juice). Apparently, when water is bound to food, digestion is slower, explains Elizabeth Somer, RD, author of 10 Habits That Mess Up a Woman's Diet. That's why in one study women found chicken-rice soup more satisfying than chicken-rice casserole and a glass of water--even though the soup had 27% fewer calories! One exception to this rule: Because it's easy to confuse hunger and thirst, if you find yourself craving something--but what?--drink a big glass of water and wait a few minutes. You may find that's what you really wanted.

Myth 3: Shellfish is high in cholesterol.

Actually: On one hand it's true, just three ounces of shrimp deliver more than a third of your daily cholesterol, but there's a surprising flip side to this story: Shrimp are low in saturated fat--the kind that becomes artery-clogging bad cholesterol--and they have a smidgeon of heart-healthy omega-3s. In fact, University of Southern California researchers discovered eating shellfish, such as shrimp, every week reduced heart attack risk by 59%!

Myth 4: The occasional burger and fries won't kill you.

Actually: If "occasional" means every Friday night, then no. But if it means every few months, and you're fit, and you've got good "numbers" (weight, waist size, cholesterol, blood pressure) AND you're chowing down on vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and other nutritious fare most other days, hey, you'll live. But few of us are that perfect. If you do occasionally indulge? Offset the effects of a fat fiesta with a brisk, 90-minute walk afterward.

Myth 5: Women naturally gain weight after menopause.

Actually: While you can blame a lot of things on hormones (from acne to PMS), in this case slowing down physically is far more likely at fault. Study after study has found that older women who exercise regularly and vigorously maintain their girlish figures. What about those charts that say as you get older, you need to eat fewer calories to simply maintain your weight? Same story. The research doesn't show that age (instead of inactivity) accounts for the drop.

Myth 6: Diet soda is worse than the real thing.

Actually: Soft drinks now outrank coffee as America's favorite beverage, but we all would be better off switching to water, diluted juice, and green tea than drinking either diet or regular soda. Both increase kidney and heart disease risk, plus they contain acids that erode tooth enamel, inviting cavities.

Final fact (this one's no myth): Maintaining your weight and body mass index at a desirable level can make your RealAge as much as 6 years younger.

Myth. Potatoes are ok for you. NO potatoes act in the body just as white bread and pasta not like whole grains......real grainy grains like steal cut oats, flax bread and the like all help maintain a level insulin spike as opposed to refined carbohydrates........so Leave the Potatoe out of you dish unless you engage in moderate to intense physical activity on a regular basis.....It would be better to upload your diet with spinach, swiss chard, and other greeny greens than ingest a potatoe.....So to who ever wrote this article...If one wants to lose pounds while maintaining top physiological health.....Carve the carbs as you progress through your day, eat lots of dark veggies and eat tons on fruits to maintain an alkaline environment for healthy cellular metabolism, GET OFF OF UNNECESSARY MEDICATIONS! MEDS DIRECTLY AFFECT LIVER FUNCTION...THE CENTER OF FATTY METABOLISM. Get out of pain...the biggest inhibitor of physical activity and cause of fatique, sleep trouble and depression...SO GO SEE YOUR CHIROPRACTOR.....and fnally MOVE! get moving...walk, take the stairs, swim, do yoga, join a dodgeball league....even if you do it a little over the course of a year you can add it all up and realize total health.....Make small changes not big ones....stick to them...and then make more.....I hope this was informative....Dr.Malik

Dr Malik is right on. A potato is not a potato if it is cooked because then it becomes mere starch with not much merit to claim. Geese, I'm so tired of these contradictions. Look at the glycemic index of a potato! Not the content in calories! And starch not imbedded in fibers is always high on the index. So it makes your insuline rise up too high and to rapidly. Result: It has a good chance of making you fatter. PERIOD.

I agree with the above post with respect to working some sort of physical activity into your day. You don't have to join a gym people. I'm a mother of a five year old and 2 year old and believe me I get a lot of exercise throughout the day going up and down stairs, cleaning, chasing after the kids. Co-workers ask me how I keep so slim...I tell them I get lots of exercise at home, and not at a gym. I can eat what I want....of course I try to eat healthy whenever possible but I don't deprive myself of a treat here and there. Diets DO NOT work!! Unless you can see yourself on that diet for the rest of your life, don't waste your money and time. Diets are a temporary solution to the problem of being overweight. Allow yourself to indulge sometimes, but keep in mind PORTION control. Eat a varied diet and incorporate all the food groups whenever possible. Get LOTS of exercise....people are so lazy these days. Take the stairs, park further from the mall, go for a walk after supper....spring is almost here, the clocks go forward next week, and it will be lighter in the evenings....get out and walk! This is not magic. You will be surprised with how great you feel, how engergetic you are, and the difference in how your body looks. Oh, I also do some light weights at home, and some abdominal exercise to keep my body looking toned. Good luck everyone!

Very interesting and good points that I pretty much knew and follow as routine. Keeping fit and eating right most of the time allows for the excesses without risk.

I guess if you are eating potatoes day in, day out, you will find yourself packing on the pounds, but again if we look at portion control and moderation when incorporating these foods into our diets, eating potatoes and other starchy foods should be of no concern to your health/weight.

Interestingly enough, latest nutritional research suggests putting butter on potatoes is better than eating them plain. As long as you don't overdo it, and keep a calorie count. The butter slows down the digestion of the potato which, on its own, has a high glycemic index, meaning it ups your blood sugar and contributes to weight gain. Better yet is a "healthy" fat like olive oil.

Coming to the defence of the poor potato again....don't forget that the skins are packed full of nutrients and fibre. Bake your potato and eat the skin too!

Thank you, finally some one with brains. I've been in the food industry for a number of years. I've always stood be hind my beliefs, that no diet is good. No margarine, diet soda , low fat any thing. In order to make diet and low fat drinks and food, they have to take something out and replace it with... {what}, chemicals. I say go natural, don't fall for all the manipulative add campaigns, and eat what you want. If you need to lose a few, just cut you're portions in half. This way you dont feel your missing out on anything.

I don't know how it says hormones don't play a part in weight gain. Maybe they should research hormones a bit better, I don't agree with that at all

In addition to all this great advice (except "burger and fries, here I come" you mean to say, "cancer and diabetes here I come" and "a 90 minute walk..." try 90 minutes less of television or sat in front of your computer one day...don't forget to stay in the perimeter of your grocery store; fresh (or frozen) food and stay out of the aisles with all the packages. Those packages contain garbage. The more raw food you eat, the healthier you will be. Try to have 'raw' at every meal. Include in your diet food that represent all the colours of the rainbow. Read the book 'In Defense of Food' and go to the site naturalnews.com! Enjoy...

the problem is not with food. The real problem is what the North American concept is of a "portion". Go to any restaurant, order a single meal, and you will be served enough food for 2 and sometimes 3 people. After years and years of this, we actually believe that this is how much we need to eat in order to be satisfied........

The acids in soda can cause cavities? Ugh, now they tell me....I suppose I've been too careless thinking it was only sugar that caused cavities! Most of thses I already knew. So it may not help me to lose weight, but at least my tooth enamel will be stronger!

I agree everything in moderation. I just started my own diet. No pills. Just got off starch & sweets & I have shed down 20lbs in 6weeks. Was it hard? No, not really. Protein & raw veggies all day. I am going for another 20lbs.

Not only is the 'North American' diet to blame, but the 'North American' lifestlyle. Look at the French with their high calorie foods, yet they are svelte as ever. Lifestyle plays a big part of this too. Along with the big drug companies, private companies, and indivduals make millions off of selling their diets. Look at Atkins for example.

Pop in general isn't good... but since we've been fascinated by it since childhood, it's hard to avoid. It's all about water, but there are times when u just want something that has a little "fizz" to it. My dentist told me if you drink pop WHILE eating, instead of just sipping it all day long, it wont corode your teeth as much.

Potats when boiled absorb liquid and these potatoes are more fattening than baked potatoes because of the way the the stomach and intestines take alot longer to digest the ones that have absorbed the water or stew juice (&fat) so go with baking when you really need a fix of potato.

Interesting article. The last question was not answered however. Is diet soda worse than the real thing? I'm not sure if it is worse either, however high fructose corn syrup contributes to obesity, so what is it doing in diet soda??
