The easiest ways to lose 10 pounds ever

Posted Fri, Feb 22, 2008
POST A COMMENT »

It's weird, but few of us remember this seemingly unforgettable food fact: You can lose 10 pounds a year by cutting out 100 calories a day. Maybe it's just too easy?!?

...Or maybe we just really don't know what 100 calories looks like (unless it's in one of those snack packs). Enter this tip list from The Portion Teller Plan, a raved-about guide to "eating, cheating, and losing weight permanently" that's finally available in paperback. Encourages nutritionist/author Lisa R. Young, PhD, RD: "Instead of meticulously consulting calorie charts or obsessively checking the USDA Nutrient Database, try these simple, painless, calorie-cutting moves" -- each one eliminates about 100 calories.

The punchline: Do one a day, every day, and you'll drop those 10 pounds without doing a single other thing. Or go wild and do two a day! You'll drop 10 pounds in just six months without a minute of dieting. Beauteous.

NO-BRAINER WAYS TO CUT OUT ABOUT
100 CALORIES A DAY
A sampling from Lisa Young, RD

  • Eat only half of a candy bar or an energy bar (both pack a lot of calories).
  • Use 1 tablespoon of salad dressing instead of 2 (toss the salad really well and you won't even notice the difference).
  • Choose small 1-ounce pitas instead of the larger 2-ounce size.
  • Spread 1 tablespoon of peanut butter instead of 2 on bread or crackers.
  • Leave the last few bites of pasta on your plate.
  • Use 1 pat of butter instead of 3 on a baked potato.
  • Order a tall cappuccino instead of a grande next time you visit Starbucks.

More ideas from RealAge

  • Scramble 1 egg for yourself, not 2.
  • Make all your sandwiches open-faced -- omit the top slice of bread.
  • Skip the last 3 bites of any main course.
  • Snack on 1 fist-sized bunch of grapes, not 2.
  • Grab 5 Hershey's dark chocolate Kisses instead of 10.
  • Choose a white wine spritzer over a 5-ounce glass of wine.
  • Have a 6-inch Roast Beef sandwich at Subway instead of a 6-inch Classic Steak & Cheese.
  • Order a small cup at Dairy Queen instead of a small cone.

Have some great tips yourself?

2 large eggs = @200calories 4 large egg whites = @ 80 calories. You save the calories, cut the cholesterol, and keep the protein. Can't lose.

That last comment about the eggs is ridiculous. By cutting the yolk you lose alot of vitamins and essential fatty-acids that are GOOD for your body, and not only that, the yolk contains more protein then the whites.

My carton of eggs say 70 calories an egg, and that's the full large-sized egg. If your eggs are so big to be 100 calories each, I wonder just how big they are!

The ultimate way to shed lbs is food combining every 3-4 hours. Every meal combine a protein, carb and an Ess. Fatty Acid (EFA). Protein should be the size of your palm, carb should be the size of 2 closed fists together and the EFA should be 1 tbsp. eg olive oil, flax, peanut butter, 8-10 almonds. When you combine the EFA you are intaking a good fat so your body releases the bad fat. Eating every 3-4 hours tells your body that you are not starving it and the body will not store excess fat for energy. Its really that simple. Water intake for every 20 lbs you wish to lose is 1.5L of water. Exercise is a must!! Get moving 2-3x per week for 20-30 mins. Here is an example of my breakfast- 1/4 cup low fat cottage cheese (protein) 1 apple (cut in halves are 2 fists together) and 1 tsp of peanut butter. Write every meal down and limit your intake of bananas, carrots, baked potatoe, raisins, no more that 2 fruits per day, no sugar, cream, white rice and bread. Weight watchers brown bread is fine as long as you don't intake more that 2 slices per day. I must add, losing weight is also a mindset. Are you ready to shed those layers of protection? With shedding fat is also releasing layers of old emotional garbage. This is why most people go back to their old eating habits. They have to feel emotion. Are you ready to peel the layers of the onion? I hope this has been helpful to someone out there. Health and Wellness to you! Holistic Practitoner,Ontario

I indulge in a chocolate popsicle - one a day to get my fix of chocolate. It has only 90 calories and is a great snack instead of an actual candy bar.

Its a simple equation for any given week if you take in more calories then you expend you gain weight and vice versa. Its physics: the law of conservation of mass. Simply exercise a little more or take in less calories

Eat only when you are hungry; wait until you are at "0" and eat until "5" ie. satisfied; not ever a 10. Try to eat a fist-sized portion of food: that is the size of the stomach! Think of it as releasing pounds; not losing it. Sometimes we find something that we lost! Taken from the book "Thin Within" by Judy Halliday, which has been helpful to me.

Haha paradoxifl is completely right... If you want to lose weight, eat less but don't waste food. Restaurants give you way too much food... When eating out, eat slow and when you feel full, stop eating and ask for the rest of your food to go. This way, you don't overeat, you don't waste food, and you save a little extra when eating out. Cheers

I only recently received the best advice ever - and it's true to most of us. We can do the little meal thing all through the day, pretend to do enough excersice (but few of us do the right thing - stair climbing, old fashion crunches, and walking). My own experience was a ten pound loss in the first two weeks of any regular activity that involved atleast 2 hours a day of walking. Sure I was too busy to eat all day long, but I'd gorge at bedtime. That was fine, til I was no longer walking at work. Over winter, I put on 14 lbs and couldn't figure out why. I ate the same, did the same stuff - but heavier with no end in site. Now I have it figured. If I can reincorporate the 2 hours of walking (and if you think about it, 10 here, 10 minutes there, it all adds up) and quit eating after say 7pm, I should be on track again. The other little trick I played before I put on the weight again, was laying in bed to watch the Reba marathon that inevitably comes on every evening. For an hour, I would off and on (as I could stand the endurance), do leg raises and crunches - even got up to the ol' 200 point. First time in my life I had the great flat tummy, and I'm not kidding when I tell you it went from pull the shirt down as far as I could to "right on" in less than 2 weeks when I did this every other night. So, my body enjoyed the change of pace and responded. 7 nights of crunches and it was going well, so that's the chore once again. Long story, a little longer ... mix it up. Try it for a few weeks and if you don't feel great about it, change something. Just don't quit throught the winter as I did, cause it was 10 steps forward and 8 steps back and it's hard to get up the energy when you're feeling low about it that's for sure.

Sit down to every meal and enjoy your food. Think about every bite and how it tastes. If you are eating because you are bored - this method will stop that completely.

simple rule, eat less, do more! you see when calorie consumed is less than calorie spent, you lose weight. makes a lot of sense even in nutrition and calorie balance. but 'tis so hard to do for so many people.

Umm .. wrong. It might be you at a 10 pound *deficit*, but your not going to necessarily lose 10 pounds. i.e. you might already be gaining 20lb / year.

My husband has the problem of skipping lunch and then over eating at night. The easy way for him to shave a few calories, I switched him from a "dinner" plate to a "luncheon" plate. North American plates have turned to platters, and the natural instinct for him was to fill it. He still does, but the portions are much smaller, and he feels way better at night. More energy for him, more reward for me ; ) It goes along with what his mom always said....finish everything on your plate. Hungry or not. Now he can still enjoy his meal without feeling like he has to diet.

All of these so called revolutionary ideas add up to one thing... you end up eating less. Wow, who would have thought that eating less is the key?

Loosing wieght is not about just about exercising and eating healthy foods at the right portion, although that is a very large part. However the emotional side of loosing wieght is the real challenge for most people. There is a reason that people who are over wieght allowed themselves to get that way. And often finding the motivation and discovering the reason your over wieght is the biggest challenge of all.

Everyone seems to think that by just cutting out some food, you'll lose weight. How come no one seems to mention the benefits of exercise? You can eat a normal diet and not have to cut out all of this nutrisous food if people learned to get off their butts and exercise! Its that simple!! No wonder there are so many people with eating disorders!

I lost almost 50 lbs by cutting out crap: - No pop or alcohol - No junk food - No greasy fast food (subs or pitas are alright) - Rye or 100% whole wheat bread The other bonus was eating 6 small meals a day, paired with 20 min of physical activity each day. A typical day for me is: Breakfast: Oatmeal Mid-Morning Snack: Protein Shake Lunch: Turkey/Chicken or Roast Beef sandwich with fat free yogurt and fruit Mid Afternoon Snack: 1% Cottage Cheese Supper: Beef Stroganoff on rice with veg Evening Snack: 1% Cottage Cheese or High Fiber Cereal I usually hit the gym 2x each day with weights at lunch and cardio after work. Simple enough, feed for function not for fun. Another key is hydration I typically drink 4-5 liters of water each day, this will eliminate water retention and bloating and instantly slim down your waistline.

Ok, this is the secret: stop obsessing over food! Eat three meals a day that truly satisfy you in terms of taste and amount. If you eat what you want during these meals you will not be tempted to snack between meals. Avoid pre-packaged food and fast food as much as possible, neither will satisfy you. If you are craving something, eat it, is your body's way of telling you what it needs. Get in tune with your body's signals - eat when you are actually hungry! And don't be afraid of carbs, they make you happy!

well here's my 2cents on this article.if you want to lose weight exercise 30 mnts each day and eat in moderation and not pig out.from time to time you can indulge but not limit yourself with great foods that your body needs.your body tells you when your full and when you are, put away your plate and walk away.simple as that.i dont follow any die regime.because not every diet plan works for eveybody.so what ever suits your needs that's what you should do and follow.

I don't worry about the numbers on the scale. Just get functionally fit and work out to stay that way and eat what you want. People are so concerned about how much they weigh, yet can't shovel the driveway or jog up the stairs at work withought breathing through their mouth. Google crossfit, it will change your life.

To paradoxifl, it's not about spoiled North Americans or not enjoying food, it's about being healthy and eating properly. Yes, the proper way would be don't take that much maybe but that's not how the psyche works. People with food and weight issues need to see lots of food on their plate. It's not wasting as long as you put it in the fridge for leftovers. And to guun2000, it's not an ad for those chains, that's how North Americans eat unfortunately and by incorportating those into this article was smart because they will always eat that crap but this way they can cut the calories. The article was good but I do agree with Ash, where is more mention of exercise. I believe everything in moderation. If you want a chocolate bar, eat it, but not everyday. I don't agree with only 2-3 days a week for 20-30 minutes per session - EVERYDAY people should exercise. Doesn't matter what it is, walk, run, some cardio for sure!! You'll feel great and looking great will come!!

I read everyone's comments. It all boils down to this: Output (in calories) minus Input (in calories) equals a ve number. So you burn more than what you take in. This means, with eating right - repeat, eat right - you take in 1700 calories a day, spend close to 1700 to 1900 calories with exercise and basic metabolic requirement, then you got it. For women you need at least 1200 and for men it is 1500 as the base. So, your exercise should burn about 500 to 600 calories - 5 times a week. Simple formula and it is do-able. Try it. Eat all you want as long as you do not go over the limit of the output minus input formula.

Eating right and exercise are really the keys to a healthly lifestyle. For those who live alone - treat yourself- use your good china and crystal, light candles and sit and enoy a healthly meal. Too often one is emotionally eating. Do short bursts of exercise while those commericals ( which are mostly about food) are on. Good luck to all who are fighting the battle of weight loss!

Atkins worked for me and my family and relatives..very quickly! I had 20 carbs per day which is easy to figure out as everything is labelled these days. 1st 2 weeks is induction phase which you can carry on for months if you want... Only eat anything green with a protein...no colored veggies at first..just green veggies..there are a lot to choose from..and cut out everything white...white pasta, white rice, white bread...and basically this is like diabetic diet....no sugar also.. You can have bacon and eggs and cream etc...and contrary to what you think...you get full fast..and are satisfied for hours after eating..can have cheddar cheese. not processed cheese. Anything that says light or no fat..really has the fat replaced with more sugar!

After I tried everything else, BUT exercising, I learnt that it didn't work out. Finally, started jogging, and it made all the difference. Life style in North America is such that majority of us spend 9 hours by the computers. The diet is also unhealthy, hidden sugars and fats in everything, but water. It's important, if start jogging, to get a program and start slowly. I tried jogging before, but gave it up as I couldn't last more than 3 minutes at a time. Then I got a progarm that actually explains how you do it. One minute jogging, one minute walking....that's how you start. After nine weeks, one runs 5k. Doing that makes me feel much better, no tiredness at all. Needless to say, I am not as hungry, and I don't have to watch what I eat any more. For me, counting calories was opposite from enjoying one's life. There 's no one in my environment, that looks slim, without some form of exercising. There are some that are slim, they're smokers, but they again don't look good. Majority of my friends started jogging because of chronic tiredness.
