I overheard some girls talking when I was walking through the hallway. I know this is sneaky and the fact that I was behind a door is different than sitting down somewhere and listening to people talk to try to talk to them or you just happen to be there. I have no experience with girls.....I never been on a date and I never had a girl that was really a friend...more like acquaintances or short term people I associate myself with I guess i'm just trying to figure them out since I can't seem to get a date

But tonight my dad wont be back for hours and my aunt is out of town and my grandparents went out to eat with some long lost relatives ( i was not invited ) so im very paranoid as you can tell. Every noise freaks me out (which there are many because even though its the country i live in a busy neighborhood. how do i deal with this? all my family is either at dinner 30 min away and no where near ready to finish, out of town on buisness or (my moms side of the family) lives 4 states away!! Its being so awkward for me , and Im not racist, but its playing around with my hormones; getting me mad, some of his black friends come up to mee & they're like; "dayymm , didn't know you liked niggaaas" I try to ignore them. But also, a lot of people aren't liking us together. I was gonna be with him at lunch, but I saw him with his "brothaaas" ; He said he wanted to chill with me , BUT its really affecting everything. So I chilled with my bestfriend, and stayed away from him. the only alone time we have, are some passing periods, when no-one's looking . He said to give them time, and they'll get over it. but it annoys the shit out of me. D:

Is diet soda really bad for you?

Posted Thu, Jan 17, 2008
POST A COMMENT »

Diet Coke--the best-selling sugar-free soft drink in the country--has spawned a cult-like following among Americans. Some even swear they're addicted to the stuff. But rumors abound about the drink's health effects, some blatantly false and some surprisingly true. Can you separate fact from urban legend?

1. People have grown deathly ill from drinking cans of Diet Coke with dirty tops.

Myth. Legend has it that the lethal hantavirus spreads to humans when they drink soda contaminated by the droppings of warehouse rats or mice. True, humans can catch hantavirus from rodent waste bur there are no known cases of a person getting it from unclean Diet Coke cans (or any food packaging). Still, it's a good idea to wipe icky stuff off your top before popping it.

2. Diet Coke is 99% water.

Fact. One Diet Coke ad actually brags about this. The marketing strategy behind the ad hinges on the idea that anything that is mostly water can't be bad for you. (Not true. Insecticides are often mostly water.) What's important is what makes up that other 1%.

3. Diet Coke's sweetener was developed as an ant poison and is therefore hazardous.

Myth. Aspartame, the artificial sweetener in Diet Coke, was created by a chemist working on an ulcer drug. The compound doesn't kill ants or short-circuit their nervous systems, as legend has it. Even if those things were true, they wouldn't prove that aspartame is dangerous to humans, since many products that aren't toxic to us (like black pepper) repel ants.

4. Diet Coke exacerbates arthritis.

Myth. In fact, the aspartame in Diet Coke may actually ease arthritis! Studies of people with osteoarthritis or a mix of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis found that aspartame relieved their pain and helped their joints move more fluidly. (Note: The studies weren't done specifically with Diet Coke.)

5. Drinking Diet Coke while eating Mentos candies can create a mildly explosive reaction in your body.

Fact! Luckily, you can't consume enough to cause a major internal eruption. Yet some very sticky people have had a wild and crazy time creating geysers that shoot over 10 feet high, including a mini-version of the Las Vegas Bellagio fountains that involved hundreds of candies and 200 liters of Diet Coke (we're not kidding). How does it work? Certain types of Mentos have a microscopically rough surface that, when combined with the carbon dioxide in Diet Coke (or any soda), seems to create an insane number of bubbles. Pressure builds FAST and boom! Watch it happen.

6. Drinking Diet Coke can cause or worsen multiple sclerosis symptoms.

Myth. The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation has debunked this falsehood, as have the FDA and other organizations. The notion that Diet Coke can cause neurological disorders may be based on an observation by the Centers for Disease Control years ago, that in some people, aspartame seemed linked to mild neurological problems, such as headaches and moodiness. However, the CDC found that these symptoms are mild and affect most people, not just diet soda drinkers.

7. Diet Coke isn't 0 calorie.

Myth. Contrary to Web rumors, Diet Coke does not have 40 or more calories, and the company does not get to call its drink calorie-free in exchange for paying big ol' fines to the FDA. Drinks can only be called "calorie-free" if they have fewer than 5; Diet Coke has less than 1.

8. Diet Coke may cause cancer.

A big maybe. Arguments about an aspartame-cancer connection have flared for years. Recently, Italian researchers concluded that aspartame does increase certain cancers in rats, including breast cancer. But the scientific truism applies: Rats aren't people. And more than 200 studies, including one on humans in 2006 by the National Cancer Institute, have found no evidence of this. Still, suspicious groups remain, including the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an ardent consumer advocacy group. What to do? Drink responsibly--and we don't mean downing the FDA's "acceptable" max of 21 cans of aspartame-sweetened soda a day for a 165-pound adult. Inside all the research there's an informal consensus that, for adults, a can a day is likely to do no harm.

Tons of cola drinkers have switched to diet formulas to slash their sugar intake. And avoiding foods with simple sugars as one of their first five ingredients can make your RealAge 3.6 years younger. Sweet!

What works for me is a warm cup of milk with one or two teaspoonfuls of honey, just before going to bed. The honey helps to release the tryptophan in the milk and hence speeds up sleep.

"Drinking Diet Coke while eating Mentos candies can create a mildly explosive reaction in your body." NOT TRUE! While the Mentos Diet Coke explosion is true for external tests, the same cannot be said for internal ones. A "mildly explosive reaction" does not occur inside you.

No comment has been made in reference to the way the human body handles aspartame. I have read in health articles that aspartame is not recognized by the body as food, or as anything it knows what to do with , so it is stored in the cells, which is like piling up garbage and reducing the effectiveness of your body at the cellular level! The more you ingest the more puffy and toxic you are likely to get. Why even put this in your body? Incidentally, the only gum I have found without aspartame is cinnamon.

There may be another reason diet drinks are bad for you. When you drink them, the body is expecting a big hit of sugar, so it sets up the system to break this down quickly. However, the big hit of sugar never arrives. The body may go into overdrive, processing sugar and causing your blood sugar to plummet. You immediately start craving sugar and may well go on a junk food binge, stuffing anything in your mouth that will boost your blood sugar levels. Hence, diet drinks can actually cause to gain wait.

Well, some of that information isn't really helpful as Aspartame is an artificial sweetener, and once it enters a persons body, it changes to formaldehyde which preserves fat.

I DON'T BELIEVE THIS! I found some of these drinks contain HYDROGEN PEROXIDE! I don't know why they need it in a "soft drink". We use this solvent to remove organic contaminations from rock. See it for yourself: buy a bottle of HP from a Dollarama or wherever (cost a dollar). Put it on the ceramic tiles or any dirty surface. You'll find effervescence and a clean surface behind. Well, if you want to "clean" your stomach may be it's good idea to have these HP loaded drinks.

The article makes no mention of reports released linking the CO2 in the beverage (any carbonated beverage) to poor bone health. The reports contend that the carbon dioxide bonds with magnesium in the blood, thus depriving one's bones of a much-needed mineral. Mentos and Diet Coke? Is that really something worth discussing in a health article? Did I miss something, and that's a typical snack combo? Nothing like a cool Diet Coke and a pack o' Mentos on a hot day...

you know, even though I think that drinking diet pop isn't going to kill you, aspartame IS a chemical, and many people are violently reactive to the stuff....do we want a unnatural element in our body? I would rather have sugar in my body then aspartame.... alas, everything in moderation right?

If diet drinks are so bad, and can actually cause you to gain weight, and do all sorts of horrible things to your body, how did I go from 334 Lbs to 215 Lbs 14 months whilst drinking 2L of Diet Coke/Pepsi per day? I did some hard work and self discipline. Don't blame the food, blame yourselves.

I agree with everyone on here with comments about "aspartame". That chemical is POISON. I am no expert, doctor or scientist but I recommend not to drink Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet anything! Stick to what is proven to be healthy like ... hmmmm, ah yes...water! Aspartame is like formaldehyde in your blood. If you are not dead, why embalm yourself! Just food for thought! ;-)

It's no secret that regular soft drinks are far worse for you than diet drinks simply because of all the sugar. High risk of diabetes, obesity, and tooth decay. You might as well just pour sugar into a bottle of water and drink it, save yourself a few bucks, for the same effect. LOL

aspartame is now linked to a multitude of health problems when consumed at the levels these "addicts" are consuming. just from personal experience, my previous employer gave us free sodas and everyone drank diet coke all day long. it caused me to be hungrier, my mood darkened considerably, my weight fluctuated and my hair become noticeably thinner. since i've gone back to all water and tea, these problems are subsiding. my hair is even growing back the way it used to be. my advice: say no to the diet crack!

Ian B there's no sugar in american soft drinks anymore. diet drinks have chemicals and regular drinks have high fructose corn syrup. corn syrup is the leading cause of obesity in americans. it is in just about every "sweet" food product in the US and is making our nation fat, lazy and as a result, apathetic about health. all just so the corn industry can get its grubby hands on more cash. nice. but alas, that's what we've made of capitalism. we've let corporations degrade the quality of everything we buy so they can show investors bigger profits each year and stay in business. sad but true. if you want "real" coke with actual sugar in it, you'll need to go down to mexico. i had some last year and it was delicious.

Aspartame is not cancerigene according to the IARC who is the big institution studying cancer chemicals. FDA does not consider Aspartame as a dangerous chemical and not a cancer-prone compound. I studied it carefully and the answers are non conclusive. Not negative. IARC stopped its research or delayed it. (I can be wrong). But FDA never considered it as cancer prone. that is sure. FDA.Gov and IARC.org do your homework. This is a hoax, the worst ever. A racket. I am diabetic so I drink it since 1980 and I smoke. But I am diabetic only. The only reason is that VP of USA was on the board of the company who discovered Aspartame (eli Lilly) and during the 80's, Aspartame was considered as an incredible achievement by all researchers in the world. Were all they wrong? WERE ALL THEY WRONG? WAS "NATURE'S STAFF WRONG? Another myth: coke is supposed to clean brass. WRONG. And it was proven safe for stomach (2 evidences). But it contains like all soft drinks, enough sugar to cause deseases and i know one case were sugar killed a wonderful man. Plain coke is not good for health but diet coke is good. Coke causes an addiction due to its amount of cafeine and this is known. I gave two sources: IARC.org and FDA.gov. Beware the sugar in soft drinks. This is a killer. Finally, Aspartic acid is one of the proteins buiding the DNA (the 4 amino acids named bases. And it is a sort of vitamin. (This is not Aspartame). The ignorants and manipulators should shut their mouths because what they say can lead to accusations of fraud. And it will. Check what I wrote to be sure. I may be slightly wrong. ASK I.A.R.C. and ask F.D.A. So you know Distilbene? Thalidomide? These were drugs that destroyed lives, among them, mine. But you don't know them. And it's normal. These drugs caused s

My two coleagues had stroke at 39 & 40. One neighbour had a stroke when 33. I've noticed that they had one thing in common: they all drank diet drinks. That's when I look at all sources of information, and sure enough, there are unerring links between the two. So regardless of what article says, stay away from diet drinks. And yes, sugar is less harm than aspartane. Do your own search. There is plenty of info to support the statement.

While I'm with corruptionhater in his assessment of the bias of all those so-called "studies" (always follow the money when considering anything that anyone tells you), I'd caution against looking at chemical compounds in quite such a cimplistic manner. Chemical compounds don't necessarily change their properties in very linear ways when changes are made to the compound. The most innocuous components could turn deadly when the atoms of each individual substance are re-arranged or combined with atoms of other substances to from molecules of the deadlilest explosives or poisons, and the other way around. The atoms of water are a component of some of the most corrosive acids, for example. (Further, you can kill someone with a chunk of ice if you drop it on their head from a few stories above, while if you melted this chunk first, it wouldn't cause any harm. Or you can boil a person to death in hot water or burn them with steam. Same linear chemical composition in all cases, though.) So, be careful about judging a substance's properties based simply on its linear chemical formula.

corruptionhater, one of aspertame's ingreadients is not methanol Wood alcool but Maltitol which is a bi-product of malt fermentation (Whiskey and Beer) where on one side is alcool and the other is the fermetation waste, this waste is reprocessed and the sweet part of this yeast is used as a sweetener since to produce alcool bacteria digest all the sugars to produce yeast this reprocessed can be a sugar substitute as it is pasty and does not break down(yeast is a mold), they add chemicals to break it down making it into Aspertame so you can use it in food products. Millions of diabetics use aspertame and have not died from it, unlike Saccharin which was actually a rat poison developped as a sweetner and was made with Methanol.

I have been drinking d. pepsi (2l/day) since I was in my early 20's (now 40). I quite last week. Cold. As dumb as it sounds, you get addicted to the taste of the stuff. I did not drink anything else. I quite because of what I have read. Myth/not, it's not worth a soda. Currently I am very overweight, so I'll keep an eye on this too. So week one... I am so damn tired. No energy. I can sleep forever and still wake tired. Good thing though, my stomach pain has subsided greatly and other side effects (burping lots) are not as noticable. Hand tremors are much better. And sugar cravings are way down!! :) I don't know if these were a side effect or not, but I do know that they were there, and now they aren't. I'm keeping a record of it, because I was a serious diet pop drinker.
