8 Ways to fight fall weight gain

The summer's over, and with it, any need to show up in public in a bathing suit. But before you layer on the sweaters -- and the pounds they can hide -- check out this advice from Daphne Oz (yes, the daughter of Dr. Oz, RealAge medical advisor and Oprah health expert), who's followed her first book, The Dorm Room Diet, with a down-to-earth sequel: The Dorm Room Diet Planner. After years of adolescent struggles with as much as 30 extra pounds, Daphne started to lose weight in high school -- and went to college determined: She not only avoided the loathed freshman 15 but lost 10 pounds. Talk about A+ work! Here are her top stay-slim tips, no matter what your age:

Drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily, including one glass before every meal.

Avoid emotional eating. The next time you reach for that cookie, ask yourself whether you're being prompted by stress, hurt, depression, boredom, or even joy. The purpose of eating is to fuel your body, not temper your feelings.

Always have breakfast. It gives energy to your body and brain, and keeps you from going into starvation mode and binge-eating later.

Schedule time to eat. Plan on three meals and two fruit or veggie snacks every day. Look at your schedule for the day and block out windows of time to eat; "not enough time" is not an excuse.

Count to your age before you "cheat." Anytime you find you are about to eat something that's not healthy, count to your age. If you still want a bit after your countdown, feel free; you've made a conscious decision to indulge.

Ditch the defeatist attitude. Everyone falls off the bandwagon sometimes. The important thing is to get back on. So when you succumb to that late-night bowl of ice cream, don't think, "Well, I've already been bad, so I might as well finish the rest of the carton." Instead, enjoy the occasional indulgence and resume your resolve.

Get off the couch. A daily exercise routine would be ideal. But even walking up a few flights of stairs for a face-to-face conversation is better than instant-messaging.

Avoid processed snacks. Always try to have a piece of fruit rather than processed snack foods, especially late at night. If fruit alone doesn't cut it, try adding some peanut butter. If you need a sugar fix, nuke a handful of dark chocolate chips in the microwave for a few seconds and dip your fruit into that.

Sounds simple. It is. And Daphne's proof that it works.

So the DAUGHTER of the DR. on Oprah says it, so it must better??? I mean, how many degrees of separationh are required now before someone's opinion ISN'T blathered on Yahoo as "top News"??? 4??? 5??? The sister of the cousin of the hairdresser to the daughter of Dr. Oz says it, so it must be a valid opinion?????

I agree... it's nothing that I haven't heard of before. And I'm sorry, but I HATE the fact that the children of people (Dr. Phil's son, now Dr. Oz's daughter) who are experts now are able to come out with books - whatever happened to working for what you've earned?

You are all correct, there is nothing new here because THERE IS NOTHING NEW. I think emphasizing that we eat for reasons other than hunger or nutritional needs is worth remembering. The unfortunate habit of eating when we are sad is exaggerated by the fact that we tend to seek SWEET foods for these mouth/brain moments.

A few drinks in the evening helps me unwind, worry less, and not think about impulse eating. The European way. And Jennie Craig would go broke in Spain / France. Slim, lovely ladies all... The Wizard of Oz.

Whether you be on a cruise, at college, or celebrating Thanksgiving or Christmas, there's no excuse for gaining weight. It's all about portion control and regular exercise. Unfortunately, a lot of people will use any excuse they can to be irresponsible - "too busy", "on vacation", "it's winter", "it's raining outside", etc.

You know what, we all came on here to read the article, to see if there was something new to learn. Why, we are hoping for the magic pill or formula. Well, we have it, we have had it for years, we just don't like it. Secondly, there ARE health conditions that do cause one to gain weight reguardless of one's diet, so there ARE legitimate reasons why some people gain weight so stop judging. As for Daphne, it seems a lot of you are assuming she is riding on her dad's coat tails. How do you know she doesn't have some sort of degree? Even if she is, wouldn't you take the opportunity if it was presented to you? I don't know if she is or not, but we shouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions.

I recognize Dr. Oz's credentials (cardiac surgeon afterall), but his daughter? Will his dog be blogging soon too? What about his wife's recipe book? Jessica Seinfeld bakes! Jay McGraw counsels teens! Oh, and Robin McGraw - on what basis are these common folk dictating to us ???? MAKE IT STOP !!

way to loose weight: -do not snack -do not eat processed foods -do not drink sweetened juices -avoid coffee -avoid enriched, bleached flours, white rice, comercial cereals (kelogs, general mills, instant oatmeals) avoid mixing certain food groups together, ex: avoid carbs & lipids combination -eat a healthy amount of various foods in their most natural form possible, from all food groups; choose the source wisely Eat as much as you feel necessary to feel 'full' at each meal, but do not transform a meal into an orgy. Take at least 20 minutes to eat, chew slowly, but as much as possible at every bite... 'eat your soup and drink your meal' avoid drinking alcohol, never drink alcohol on an emply stomach, do not mix water and alcohol at a meal, if you choose to drink while eating, drink after you are half-way done your meal, or towards the end of your meal. You will feel less bloated and your body will naturally rid itself of stocked fat, in a slow but steady pattern. your taste buds will be better for it. your energy will soar, your alertness will improve your clothes will fit better your skin will look better and if you fall off the bandwagon, make sure you get back on it asap. oh, and perhaps one of the most important things to remember: NEVER MISS A MEAL, otherwise your body will automatically put itself in a 'stocking fat mode' because it will think that it needs to make a fat reserve in case it misses more meals.

what a crock! What's next the cousin of Oprah's long lost half sister giving advice on how to save money while overeating! OR maybe Babe Ruth's illegitmate son endorsing a new chocolate bar. This is all rediciulous and so is anyone who buys the book or reads this garbage.

I agree, it's more than a diet, it"s a life style. Understanding why you eat is a lot more important than it sounds. She may be young but she is right ...and hopefully she reaches her peers. I'm on medications that made me gain weight and does not allow me to excercise to the point of sweating. Any help with that?

Hey Disconlu, does a wealthy boyfriend make you thin or what? I thought this was a forum to have opinions about this article... By the way, there are many ways to be thin, just eat right, not too much and walk at least 30 minutes a day. If you can do up to an hour is much better. Drink hot water with lemon or acai berry so your intestines are cleared, this probably is the best to keep your stomach flat. Peace...

definitely obvious advice. i think we all know by now what is good for us and what is not and that we have to move to use the energy in our body!! the only thing i can say of that can be applied to any diet, any season and anyone, is keep track of what you eat on a daily basis. sometimes we dont realise how much we are eating and how often.control is the answer!

Fit health and Body equals know what you put in your mouth America and not only just exercise. There is no point of over eating and work out at the Y for 2 hours. If you read food labels, cook your meals, eat veggies, no pop drinks at home, eat fish, have a fruit after a meal and no sweet desert, then you really don't need to do heavy duty at the Y. Good luck.

for crying out loud. Eat what you want, just WATCH HOW MUCH you eat. Basic commonsense will tell you NOT to binge on fries and burgers daily, three times a day!!!! Limit your intake. Don't overeat DAILY. We all tend to from time to time - we are human, not robots. It is ok to have icecream but don't have it daily!! "determine what once in a while" is - icecream once a month is quite ok to have. Don't order three scoops - the craving is gone after the first 3 licks, rest is filler - so order one scoop and you will be in the same "heaven" as if you ordered three. After three you will feel awful anyway! COMMONSENSE. We don't need these "celebs" telling us and making money while doing so!
