Is moisturizer madness busting your budget? A better alternative might already be in your kitchen. Try a light sweep of sweet almond oil, instead. Believe it! Here are 5 reasons why:

1. It's so easily absorbed that there's no risk of looking like a walking oil slick.

2. It has a healthy amount of vitamin E, a primo age-fighting antioxidant that can help keep your skin's RealAge young.

3. It defends against moisture loss.

4. It's virtually scent free, so no clashing with fragrances.

5. Almond oil is in lots of products, from body lotions to cuticle balms. Among the most elegant: L'Occitane's Almond Supple Skin Oil, $30 for 3.4 oz. Among the most affordable: Almond Body Butter from The Body Shop, $8 for 1.7 oz. But the real thing is the true beauty bargain: 8 oz. of sweet almond oil is $4.25 at mountainroseherbs.com. Sweet.

Before you buy any moisturizer, read the ingredients. I was disappointed in the Body Shops Body Butters because they contain so little of the ingredients they are named for (e.g. cocoa butter, almond oil, shea butter, etc.) They seem to be using a base formula for the body butter, and then adding a little of one highlighted ingredient, rather than having a formula based around the key ingredient. The small amount might make one prefer one body butter over another -- I'm not saying it is a bad product -- but one might want to look somewhere else if you are looking to benefit from the properties of almond oil (or cocoa butter, or whatever.)

Due to my husband's peanut/nut allergy, I've been using grapeseed oil with great results. I use it on my children as well, with a little drop of lavendar essential oil.
