Who says Halloween is just for children? We know that there’s more to the spooky holiday than free candy and toilet-papering homes. Read on for party themes and costume ideas worthy of us big kids!
Party Themes
When it comes to planning a wickedly fun Halloween party, you’ll need more than just spooky lights and some pumpkins to create ambiance. Why not opt for one of the following four theme suggestions?
Sexy theme. This is a great adult theme for those not too shy about sexing things up a bit. Have everyone dress up in the sexiest characters possible, from Playboy bunnies and nurses for the women, to King Leonidas (from 300) and Adam (with fig leaf-covered genitalia) for the men.
Action heroes. Get your guests to dress up as their favourite superheroes (and villains!), such as Superman, Catwoman, Wolverine, etc. Just be careful: with the recent popularity of The Dark Knight, you may have an excess of Jokers in your midst.
Monster theme. This will allow your guests to be creative; while they can still dress up as the requisite Frankenstein’s monster, get them to be as gruesome as possible when putting together their costume. Award the most original creation with a prize.
Gender switch. For a fun theme, ask all men to dress as women and the women to dress as men. The best part is seeing how realistically feminine some men may turn up and how manly you and the girls will make yourselves over! The results may be jarring.

Costume Ideas
Want a costume that isn’t your usual witch or black cat? Our four suggestions will spice things up this Halloween!
Female Zorro. This costume requires a bit of shopping, but will also include items that you may already have in your wardrobe. You’ll need back knee-high or cowboy boots, with a pair of black Capri pants. Find a white top with bell sleeves, and wear a black corset on top of it. Head to a costume shop for a gaucho hat, eye mask, cape and sword, and you’ll be the hit of the evening!
Flapper. Whether you’re attending a 1920s-themed party or not, a flapper is always a great idea for a costume. If you decide to make it yourself, all you need is a short, black dress with spaghetti straps, and sew rows of fringe onto the dress. Accessorize with black t-strap shoes, a cloche hat, a long beaded necklace, a boa and a long cigarette holder to complete the look.
Lara Croft. To recreate the image of the adventuress brought to the big screen by Angelina Jolie, wear an all-black ensemble consisting of a pair of short shorts, a form-fitting t-shirt, a belt, and knee-high combat boots. Go to a nearby costume shop, and purchase a couple of leg holsters, two toy guns and a toy knife. Bonus points if you have long, black hair; all you’ll need to do is make a braid. If not, purchase a wig.
Weatherman on location. This costume may not ooze the sexiness of the above three, but it certainly is an original: for the costume, you’ll need a baseball cap, a yellow raincoat, and cargo pants. You’ll also need to purchase sculpting wire from a crafts store, which you will bend and duct tape to the inside of the pants and jacket to give off the effect of wind pulling you in one direction. Grab some newspaper and leaves and tape them to your jacket, and hold a microphone in-hand; if you don’t have one, make one by painting a cardboard toilet roll black and attaching a foil-covered Styrofoam ball on top.
