Vancouver's Cibo Trattoria named best new restaurant in Canada

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

MONTREAL - Reviewers have praised its emphasis on fresh local ingredients and the simplicity of its cuisine.

Now, Cibo Trattoria on Seymour Street in downtown Vancouver has received another accolade: it's been named by enRoute magazine as Canada's best new restaurant.

"Simple ingredients, sublime execution," writes Chris Nuttall-Smith in the magazine's November issue.

"The kitchen, which does rustic Italian, makes much of peasant staples: beans, potatoes, fresh pastas and organ meats."

Toronto, Ottawa and the Montreal area each have two restaurants in the magazine's eighth annual top 10 list of new establishments.

The Black Hoof in Toronto, "known almost entirely for its excellent cured meats," is in second place followed by Rush in Calgary (the "local-inspired menu is smart, cosmopolitan and completely delicious") and Atelier in Ottawa ("maddeningly good").

Here's the rest of the list, in order: Murray Street, Ottawa; Cabane a sucre au pied de cochon, Saint-Benoit de Mirabel; Ship to Shore, Malpeque Bay, P.E.I.; Pizzeria Libretto, Toronto; Culina Highlands, Edmonton; and La Salle a manger, Montreal.

Organ meats are pretty good. You've never had anything until you have had tripe, sauteed liver and bayleaf wrapped Kidneys. And healthier than all heck for you. Today's spoiled society is unaware of the old days when most every part of an animal was made use of. Some things sound nasty but taste amazing...but then again some dont. Depends on the cook, the process and the herbs/spices! ;~)

And for all people in Toronto who want to try something new and arent afraid of a little spice.... LAHORE TIKKA HOUSE on Gerrard st between Greenwood and Woodbine aves. It used to be the best kept secret, with great food and the best butter chicken this side of Delhi. Their sizzling ribs are heavenly, kababs are scrumptious, although the biryani is mediocre. Prices were low until about a year ago. Now I go once a month instead of once a week cuz I cant afford it. Eating from paper plates is tacky, but you'll forget that as soon as you taste the food.

******** JATAN and GLEN KYLE ********* What about all the animals that would die if we DIDN'T eat them? The earth would be taken over by cattle, fowl and fish!!!! Vegans and vegetarians need to respect our right to eat meat, just as they expect us to resect their right to refuse it. I've tried to refrain from eating meat once. By the 3rd day I was so cranky I was ready to kill someone.... |And probably eat their raw flesh!

this is to my "friend" Jatan... I too like Indian food. However, when it come 2 veg food, u dumbass veggies seem to ignore the fact that vegetables are also alive when u put them in hot h2o or oil. they are alive when u r cutting them into little bits and tossing them so casually into a hot pan. if u don't believe me, put that carrot head u just chopped in a bit of water and water it grow. once the spinal column is cut, the animal is dead. D-E-A-D. can u idiots understand that!? i suppose not. u have to rationalize ur need to kill to survive so u ignore that one simple fact. shut up about us non-veggies killing animals. u freaks veggies are a million times worse!!

What the hell is wrong with some of my fellow Canadians. It's just an article about a restaurant and people have to go on about dead animals, vegetarians, ethiopia, etc. It's just a restaurant....get over it.
