Market Fresh: Blueberries

Canada’s favourite late-summer berry is plump, plentiful and good for you, too

By Tory Healy, Food Associate

The Flavour
Soft, sweet and sensual.

Blueberries Go Well With...
Other summer berries; cinnamon; crème fraîche; ginger, lemon; melon; nutmeg; orange; sour cream; walnuts; yogurt.

Buying & Storing Tips
Keep your eyes peeled for wild or lowbush blueberries: they’re smaller and more intensely flavoured. Choose pints of berries that are uniformly bright in colour, firm and free of any signs of mould. They will keep, unwashed, in the fridge for only a few days. Before storing, remove any damaged berries to prevent mould spreading.

Preparing & Using Blueberries
Blueberries are highly perishable – rinse under water only briefly and only just before eating. They’re simple to prepare:

  • Bake in pies, tarts, crumbles, pastries and muffins.
  • Cook down into jams, sauces and savoury compotes.
  • Add raw to fruit salads, green salads and dishes of ice cream.

Nutrition Info
Blueberries are full of antioxidants. Just half a cup provides a generous amount of potassium, vitamins A and C, and 2 grams of fibre.
