Energy drinks, hydrating drinks, vitamin water… your local grocery store has a myriad of bottled drinks to lug around in your sports bag. But why not put away your money and just mix your own drink to stay hydrated during your next workout session? We’ve got some suggestions for you to try.
Energy Drink
Most ingredients required to make your own energy drink can be found in your home, such as tea (black, ginkgo, ginseng or green), fruit or fruit juice (naturally-sweetened) and honey, molasses or unrefined sugar. For example:
4 packets of ginkgo or ginseng tea
2 L of water
1 cup of lemon juice (freshly-squeezed)
2 cups of sugar (or sugar substitute)
1 packet of herbal tea (any flavour)
In a pitcher, infuse all the tea packets with one litre of boiling water. Pour the lemon juice into a larger pitcher, and mix it with sugar and water. Add in the tea mix and stir. Refrigerate and serve cold. Makes approximately six portions.
Hydrating Drink
Here’s an easy recipe to make your own Gatorade™ and hydrate yourself at a lower cost!
10 tbsp. of sugar
¾ tsp. of sea salt
1 packet of Kool-Aid™ mix (unsweetened)
2 L of water
Pour all the ingredients into a large pitcher and stir. Refrigerate and drink cold. You can also replace the Kool-Aid™ mix with a half-cup of orange juice.
Vitamin Water
Making your own vitamin water is actually quite complicated. Nutritionist and blogger Jonathan Fontaine actually does not recommend mixing water with vitamins. “It can be dangerous if you surpass the maximum doses tolerated,” he explains.
“At most, you can add ¼ of a powdered multivitamin to water to get something similar to VitaminWater™. These are a bit on the pricey side, and it’ll be less expensive to just take a Centrum® tablet!”
That said, if you want to get a bit of vitamin C, you can mix ¼ cup of orange juice with one cup of water. People already consume more vitamin C on a daily basis than is required, but negative effects are practically non-existent, so don’t hesitate! A woman 19 years of age and older must consume 230 mL (about one glass) of orange juice per day to get the required amount of vitamin C.
