Various types of mead are catching on as consumers seek different beverages

Facts about mead:

-Mead or honey wine is an alcoholic drink made through the fermentation of honey.

-It is likely the oldest beverage known to mankind as it dates back to Biblical times.

-It can be flavoured with herbs, spices or flowers.

-Mead was popular in early England, and although not widely distributed today, is still bottled.

Here are some retail varieties of mead:

-Traditional: Mead produced from more than one type of honey and without fruit, herbs or spices.

-Bracket or braggot: Mead made with malt.

-Melomel: Mead made with fruit (expect apples or grapes).

-Cyser: Mead produced with apples, apple cider or apple juice.

-Metheglin: Mead produced with herbs or spices.

-Pyment: Mead prepared with grapes, grape juice or grape concentrate.
