The Golden Globes are considered one of the most glamorous nights in Hollywood. The women dress up and the men pull out their tuxes. This year though, we (the lifestyle editors) found the red carpet rather bland. The dresses seem to be just strapless, fitted and down to the floor.
Don't worry - we found some dresses that stood out - either for their beauty or for their horridness. We'll start with Renee Zellweger:
Oh my god, Renee! What happened! We rely on you to wear Carolina Herrera with slicked back hair and that smirk of yours. Who decided that looking like a blond version of Elvira, Queen of the Night was a good idea? Also, when will actresses learn that a beige underpinning under black sheer is. not. a good. idea? We don't care how cute (or expensive or bust-enhancing) your corset is, obvious underwear under sheer is not a good idea and hasn't been since Madonna wore it in the eighties. Thank goodness there was at least one actress who took a chance on her dress this year. Maggie Gyllenhaal looks absolutely stunning in this elegant, blue and black, cinched waist, one shoulder gown. It may be floor length, but it has more colour and more pizazz than the rest of the outfits on the red carpet. The giant poof on the shoulder could have gone horribly wrong, but Maggie rocks it flawlessly. Definitely a stunning number. (Frazer Harrison)

Kate Winslet looks beautiful in this simple, black floor length gown, but despite her fantastic body and solid sense of style, this dress is pretty safe. She's been amping it up this year with some of her fashion statements, so we were sad to see her wear this dark, long bland piece. Her accessories and makeup and simple and beautiful but we were expecting a lot more from this Hollywood hot shot on the red carpet. (Jason Merritt/Getty Images)

Wow, we never thought we'd see someone intentionally wear a bridesmaid dress outside of a wedding, but anything is possible on the red carpet. The shinny sheen and bunches do this dress, and its wearer, no favours. The pink, although a favourite colour of Cameron's, is more Barbie pink than glamorous awards show pink. And the lifeless hair is just the cherry on top of this train wreck. (Steve Granitz/WireImage)

Hello, belted potato sack! My has it been a big year for the shapeless, starch-holding bag. We expect a lot from Ms. Jolie-Pitt, considering how much press she gets, but this look does not live up to our expectations. The colour is bland, the hair is predictable, there are no accessories to be seen and the most daring thing about the dress is that it shows a little leg. Blah. (Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

Well, Ms. B (or is it Sasha Fierce, we can't keep them straight) this dress is pretty meh. It looks like something you'd see at discounted prom dress store (speaking of which, most of the dresses tonight seem very high school graduation-esque - tight, long, and boring). There seems to be too much sparkle and glitter and not enough substance. The pulled back hair, the pushed up boobs, we've seen this before - and it's getting kind of tiring. (Steve Granitz/WireImage)

Drew is known for her flower child attitude and clothing. She's one celeb who always seems to have fun with her clothing. This time, however, we're wondering why she chose to raid the costume department for this grey number.
This dress looks great in a still photo, but we watched as she walked the red carpet and her skirt moved so stiffly, we wondered if she used the hairspray from her head to spray the netting of the skirt. It's just too old for her. Also Drew, that hair? It's bedhead gone terribly wrong. It shaded from sexy to messy about three spritzes ago. (Steve Granitz/WireImage.com)
