Mother's Day is around the corner, and if you're looking for last minute ideas, I have just the suggestion: an organic manicure and pedicure.
Most expectant and new mothers are very conscious of what they put inside and on their bodies during pregnancy and while nursing than at any other point in their lives. And with sandal season around the corner, getting your feet and hands in shape for full exposure becomes paramount in most women's minds. And new moms deserve a little pampering, after all.
I became aware of the organic manicure/pedicure a few months ago through Stillwater Spa at Toronto's Hyatt Hotel, considered by many (including yours truly) to be one of Canada's best spas. But don't only take my word for it: Stillwater was featured in the February 2008 edition of Air Canada's En Route magazine as part of a special feature on Canada's healthy hotels.
I was quite intrigued by this treatment because I truly could not figure out how they had managed to find all organic products, especially an organic nail polish remover. This was the first question I asked when I sat down with my manicurist/pedicurist Dana. She assured me that each of the products used during this pedicure are organic, including both the nail polish and remover! Dana also confirmed that the overwhelming majority of the clients who buy the organic procedure are expecting and nursing moms who don't want to expose their babies to unnecessary chemicals.
So many amazing organic essential oils are used at the spa that the simple act of smelling the beautiful aromas is relaxing.
Unfortunately, if the woman on your list is a fan of paraffin wax treatments, whether for hydrating her skin or simply because she likes the sensation, she's out of luck. There is no such treatment in the line because it doesn't follow with the organic guidelines.
The Stillwater Spa is certainly not the only location in Canada where you'll find organic or natural manicures or pedicures. All across the country, spas are offering this alternative to women (and men) who are increasingly reticent to using products with lots of chemicals or parabens.
One place to start your search would be your local natural health food stores where you'll often find many product lines.
Stillwater's organic manicure costs $50 while the pedicure is $85. Clients are treated to a few hours of pure bliss, flavoured water and tea, and some of the best biscotti cookies I've ever eaten. Visit the Stillwater Spa's web site for information on gift certificates.
