Spring Trends 101

Our tell-all guide to wearing this season's hottest looks.

By Christine Laroche

Power prints
From geometric to artsy, graphic prints have been popping up all over the runways. We dare you to resist!

The easiest way to wear prints is to choose one as the focal point and build your outfit around it, pairing it with complementing hues. Feeling gutsy? Play with different prints and textures for an extra tricked-out look.

Keep the size of the print in proportion with the size of your body - a too-small print can get lost on a voluptuous silhouette, while this season's fabulously oversized patterns are perfect for a curvaceous bod.

Highlight your waist with a top or dress that nips in at the waist or call on your new best friend: the wide belt.

Dress (Style & Co $89 at the Bay. Polyester and spandex. Sizes 1X to 3X. 1-800-521-2364 • hbc.com).
Belt ($29.99 at Addition Elle. Pleather. Sizes 1X to 4X. 1-866-388-4783 • addition-elle.com).
Bracelet (Claudia Accessories $300. Rhodium-plated metal and crystals. 1-866-515-9922 • claudiaaccessories.com).
Bag ($50 at Aldo. Pleather. 1-800-326-ALDO • aldoshoes.com).

Bold blooms
Peonies, roses, chrysanthemums, daisies, lilies... Pick your perfect posy! The season's fab florals are feminine, fresh and fun.

Steer clear of any pastely prints and look for vibrant, high-energy colour. With the gorgeous art-inspired masterpieces adorning clothes this season, you'll look pretty enough to hang on the wall.

A body-skimming dress is a key piece in a flirty femme's arsenal. Choose either a wrap dress or an A-line style that will whittle your waist. For an extra-special night out a tube or one-shouldered dress is oh-so-sexy - just remember to get support from a quality strapless bra.

Make a statement with an armful of chunky bangles.

Dress (Donna Ricco $148. Cotton and spandex. Sizes 14 to 24. 416-674-1077 • hbc.com). Bracelet (Rosemary Hedges $32. Resin. 514-937-7045). Bracelet (Rosemary Hedges $14. Resin. 514-937-7045). Shoes (Castaner $328 at Browns. Polyester. Sizes 5 to 10. Heel 9 cm. 1-800-520-SHOE • brownsshoes.com).

'70s revival
The look? Boho-ish, retro and cool - and nary a Birkenstock in sight.

Beading brings a cool arts-and-crafts feel to this retro jacket. A stack of natural-toned bangles really plays up the earthy feel.

If you wear a little volume on top (like this swingy jacket), keep the bottom lean - a pair of straight-legged or slightly boot-cut pants look sleek.

Try wearing white on top to brighten up your face. Make it modern with a pop of a bright colour underneath.

Jacket (JM Collection $89 at the Bay. Linen. Sizes 16W to 22W. 1-800-521-2364 • hbc.com).
Cami (AE Sport $24.99 at Addition Elle. Cotton and spandex. Sizes X to 4X. 1-866-388-4783 • addition-elle.com).
Jeans (Contrast Jeans $40 at Reitmans. Cotton and spandex. Sizes 14 to 22. • reitmans.com).
Glasses (Marc Jacobs $320. Plastic and acetate).
Bracelet (Nobia X-cessories $20. Wood. 1-800-561-2272 • casabawa.com).
