How to adapt safari style to the office
The safari trend is a hot topic this spring and according to Christina, it blends into a working environment quite well. "Whether it's a great new stretch cotton khaki suit or the updated safari jacket paired with this season's slim skirt," Christina says the look just works. Along with the safari trend comes tribal jewellery. In this case, you can definitely stay on trend but you have to modify the look just a touch. "Tone down the size and focus on one piece," Christina advises.
How to work prints and colours from nine to five
Prints are definitely fab for spring but that doesn't mean what works on the runway will work for the office. "Rather than the head-to-toe prints that we are seeing for spring, go for more subtle pieces like a beautiful print blouse with the new sheath skirt or try a graphic print jacket over a solid sheath dress," Christina suggests. The same thing goes for colour. Avoid too much in one outfit and opt for a single piece rather than several. Blend them with neutral tones to balance and finish off the look.
How to work pastels and neutrals into your office wardrobe
Light shades and neutral colours are signature nine-to-five hues and this spring, they're definitely on trend. You just have to make sure you don't overdo it. "Add strength and detail with accessories to avoid looking too bland with this look. Use pastels sparingly here as they can be too wishy-washy for the office," Christina advises.
The asymmetrical spring trend
This spring, asymmetrical skirts and one shoulder tops are definite must-haves, but they don't necessarily work well for the office. Asymmetrical skirts tend to have a relaxed feel to them so you're better off saving those for nights and weekends. They may not give off the professional look you're hoping to give. Neither do tops with only one sleeve. "One shoulder tops read 'out on the town' and don't work well at the office," Christina says. The perfect alternative? "Try wearing the new longer boyfriend jacket over this top so this look can work day into evening."
Which spring accessories make the work wardrobe hot list
Accessories are simply a gal's best friend. They can make or break any outfit so it's very important to select the right pieces. Statement necklaces are great, but for the office, tone it down and try not to choose one that is over-the-top and calls too much attention to you. The same goes for shoes. "This season's shoes run the gamut from glamazon to strappy. Stay professional by avoiding these extremes."
Christina's shopping checklist
Before investing in an entirely new, up-to-the-minute spring wardrobe, make sure you're splurging in the right places. Christina suggests a few questions you should ask yourself before spending a dime on trendy office attire for the spring season.
• How will I be perceived in this outfit?
• Do I look professional and polished?
• Will my image move me up the corporate ladder or pull me down?
• Is what I'm wearing distracting from my credibility?
• Do my purchases have versatility and functionality?
