FALL '09 BEAUTY TREND REPORT
From perennial classics (red lips and liquid eyeliner) to recession rebellion (manic ’80s eyeshadow and sky-high hair), the top trends to wear now

Chloé
Smoky Eyes
The season’s “power woman” theme called for a return to smoky eyes. Beyond last autumn’s predilection for basic black, we’re now into navy, pewter and cocoa territory. At Chloé, Charlotte Tilbury worked with a monochromatic brown/bronze pal-ette to give eyes a glam ’80s contoured touch, reminiscent of Christie Brinkley and Brooke Shields. FLARE pick: Annabelle Trio Eyeshadow in Haute Chocolate, $7.25.

Zac Posen
Pompadour Punk
“It’s French courtesan opulence meets punk,” says Odile Gilbert of her brash bouffant hairdos (decorated with spiked hair-bands) at Zac Posen. Redken creative consultant Guido sent hair Mohawk-high using a root-lifting spray at Luella, where he crafted a punk-themed look unique to each model. Anarchy never looked this chic. After a night of backcombed locks, treat hair to a rich moisturizing masque. FLARE pick: L’Oréal Professionnel Texture Expert Densité Thickening Primer, $29.

Proenza Schouler
Grey Matters
A smattering of grey here and there may have been a coincidence, but this new neutral showed up everywhere—on eyes, nails and even lips. At Proenza Schouler, the inspiration was grungy ’90s Seattle. Diane Kendal used “greasy smudges of grey and brown on eyelids and just below the eye.” Creamy lead lips led the pack at MaxMara. On nails, you might say it’s the new black. Dove grey brightened the mood at Matthew Williamson and Karen Walker. FLARE pick: Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Long-Lasting Nail Lacquer in Stormy Grey, $24.

Lanvin
Red Rules
At an exclusive press event in New York, P&G Beauty's creative director, Pat McGrath, told beauty editors, “I’ve never seen so many red lips in one season.” She should know, having created the makeup looks for 26 fall shows. At Dolce & Gabbana, the perfectly lined crimson lip was an ode to Old Hollywood via Scarlett Johansson—the face of the design duo’s new makeup range. For daytime wear, simply dab on lip colour and do away with lip pencil, as seen at Lanvin. FLARE pick: CoverGirl In-credifull Lipcolor in Maximum Red, $9. Dior Contour Lipliner Pencil in Holiday Red, $26.

Nina Ricci
The Wet Look
Blame it on the return of all things ’80s, but hair gel is back. The most popular do? At Narciso Rodriguez, Versace and Alex-ander Wang, it was an androgynous style that’s slicked back in the front, with a loose, wavy texture at the back (not to be mistaken for a mullet). Gilbert took the duality a step further at Nina Ricci, where she left the bottom locks blond and matte but sleeked the top down using a brunette-tinted hair gel. FLARE picks: Pantene Pro-V Curl Defining Scrunching Gel, $6.
