TORONTO - If you didn't know the collection was called "Patriarchal Femininity," the pencil-drawn moustaches and furrowed eyebrows, clunky workboots and oversized oxfords sported by the statuesque models aptly conveyed the message.
But beyond the unconventional styling, the latest spring and summer offerings from Calgary designer Paul Hardy delivered a collection comprising delicately airy creations awash in warm cream hues and lush ivories.
Military-style jackets paired with flared chemises and blouson tops and a safari poncho matched with crochet leggings were among the pairings that struck an effective balance of lending softer touches to more traditionally hard-edged designs.
Hardy made ample use of luxe fabrics and soft signature touches that added definition and volume to the pieces. Ruffles worked to dramatic effect as exaggerated, eye-catching accents rippling along skirting and reaching new heights on a flurry of folds on a high-collar chemise.
A shimmering croc print on a slim-cut skirt and feathering on a capelet vest and dress added luxury and texture, while draping on separates, notably a smooth, butterfly sheath dress, fused the ethereal with elegance.
Skirts featured slim fits, high waists and bubble silhouettes, while pants spanned from crop johns to leggings and jeans.
