TORONTO - In her latest creations, Cheri Milaney drew inspiration from the challenges faced by those trying to have it all: a hectic city lifestyle interspersed with quiet moments of pleasure.
Her exploration of those contrasts came to the fore Thursday, Day 4 of Toronto's LG Fashion Week, with the emergence of suited separates for city life and softer looks for more laid-back times.
Patterns played heavily in colourfully bold patterned jackets, notably rich brocade boleros in pink and teal flaunting fanciful ruffles on necklines and sleeves, to laser-cut cotton and lime check trapeze jackets.
Cutout shoulders and cowls added a playful peek-a-boo quality to tops. Sheer printed chiffon tunics and dresses looked free-form but sophisticated.
Pants were elegant and free form. They included the wide-legged variety in sand and neutral tones, more tapered balloon pants in black and mocha as well as pencil pants.
The Vancouver designer made ample use of soft knits and chiffons, employing ruching, gathering and pleating, which added complexity to simpler garments and fabrics.
In a testament to real women, Milaney closed the show with some notable names she dubbed "Role Models" in the show program: former Much Music VJ Erica Ehm, founder of the Yummy Mummy Club, along with Cobi Ladner, former editor of Canadian House & Home magazine, singer Amy Sky, CBC-TV GM Kirstine Stewart and actress Tonya Lee Williams.
