Your best bridal hair!

Legendary hair stylist Sam McKnight gives us the low-down on the hottest hair trends, which work beautifully for your wedding day.

By Sara Duck

It’s not often a hairstylist reaches the kind of mega-star status Sam McKnight enjoys. He was the trusted stylist and dear friend to the late Princess Diana. He’s also responsible for transforming models into superstars à la current ‘It’ girl Agyness Deyn and her super-slick pixie. He has 60 British Vogue covers to his name (the April 2008 issue featuring Victoria Beckham marked the big 6-0); he’s worked backstage for the world’s biggest designers; and the world’s most glamourous women have him on speed dial—he is quite possibly the king of hair! On a recent press trip to Toronto, Sam sat down with us to talk about all things hair, specifically bridal styles. His advice for you on your wedding day? “Go as yourself to the salon, not as a bride.” Translation: you should go in feeling and looking like you, which means your stylist will create a style that is appropriate—your hair should reflect who you are.

What styles does Sam love right now? He’s got four favourites, each of which we think are gorgeous options for your wedding day and can easily be ‘bridalized.’

Trend: Long and loose
Works Best On: Medium to long hair
Here Comes the Bride: You’re thinking this hair is too casual, not special enough for your big day, right? Wrong! Wearing your gorgeous mane down for your nuptials is not only romantic, but ultra-feminine too. The trick to making this trend bridal-worthy is in the volume: think big, natural waves, tousled texture and extra volume around the crown of the head. Also, finish it with a dainty sparkling headband to add a dash of flash.
Mane Muse: Gwyneth Paltrow

Trend: Super sleek
Works Best On: Medium to long hair
Here Comes the Bride: If you want to add drama to your wedding look, sexy sleek hair is your mane match. If you’re donning a fabulous strapless number, then you may consider wearing your hair down, parted in the middle or to the side, and super shiny. If your dress has a detailed neckline, pull back your hair into a polished pony or tight ballerina bun.
Mane Muse: Beyoncé

Trend: Retro revamp
Works Best On: Chin length to medium hair
Here Comes the Bride: Everything old is new again, especially when it comes to vintage hairstyles. Channel key eras like the 40’s Veronica Lake-inspired waves, the 50’s beehive and the 60’s French twist à la Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. There is so much choice, so pick something that will complement your dress and face shape.
Mane muse: Gwen Stefani

Trend: Touchable textures
Works best on: Medium to long hair
Bridal hair translation: Modernize your updo by adding elements of texture. Think loose chignons that are sleek in front, but have been backcombed revealing volume and lots of rich texture. If backcombing makes you nervous, opt for loosely pinned hair, which will create a romantic look with lots of movement.
Mane muse: Jennifer Lopez
