TEENS
Nail polish overload: That yellow tinge that's left behind after you remove polish will pass as your nail grows out, so don't worry about doing any permanent damage. But some women can develop an allergic reaction to the formaldehyde resin in nail polish, according to Toronto dermatologist Sandy Skotnicki-Grant. "The resulting eczema doesn't occur on the hands or around nails but rather shows up on the face and eyelids," she says. "I recommend formaldehyde-free polish for this reason."
Overprocessed locks: Proper (according to instructions) and moderate use of curling irons, straighteners, products and hair dyes and getting regular cuts is the surest way to keep hair healthy and split-end free. Also, try semi-permanent washes in order to avoid developing a common allergic reaction to PPD, the active ingredient in hair dye.
ADULTS
Nervous nail chewing: Nail biting is not uncommon and, when severe, is usually due to underlying stressors, says Skotnicki-Grant. "Focus on the stressors and the nails will fix themselves." If you're having trouble managing stress on your own, speak to your doctor about strategies. A good manicure is also a super deterrent from taking your next bite.
Post-pregnancy hair loss: Many women experience post-partum hair loss - called telogen effluvium - several months following delivery. Hair that is shed will regrow and shedding usually passes after six months. Taking a multivitamin with iron is helpful, says Skotnicki-Grant, while topical Minoxidil can stop the shedding completely.
OLDER WOMEN
Ridged nails: Vertical ridging on the nails is completely common as we age, typically occurring age 70 and beyond, is not a health hazard and requires no treatment.
Thinning hair: Similar to male balding, some post-menopausal women will experience hair loss as estrogen production decreases and testosterone picks up in its place. Topical Minoxidil can help, says Skotnicki-Grant, but unless it is continued as new hair re-grows, hair will continue to shed.
