Fresh hair fixes

Here's how to finally break out of your bad hair day rut.

Is every day a bad hair day? We've been there. Here's how to finally

break out of your rut.

Rut #1: Style-challenged

Fix: Update your product arsenal. Many unhappy clients simply don't have the right products for their hairstyles, says Chad Taylor, co-owner of Moods Hair Salon in Vancouver. "If you're getting a drastic cut, ask your stylist to educate you on which products to buy and how to use them." He says that longer hair typically needs a volumizer or smoothing serum, while shorter coifs depend on pomades and waxes.

Rut #2: Stuck in a time warp

Fix: Break the same-cut habit. Try to be more open to your stylist's ideas. "Some people say they want a new cut but shy away from every suggestion," says Taylor. If you're still not seeing results, Taylor recommends seeking consultations from a couple of new stylists. He also suggests trying a fringe or new layers. "Sometimes smaller changes can completely update your look," he says.

Rut #3: Misbehaved hair

Fix: Hold the shampoo. "I tell everyone not to wash their hair every day," says Jonathan Joseph Hanousek, a celebrity stylist based in Los Angeles. "Most products create the day-old effect for better manageability, so make it part of your routine." While the oil glands on your scalp adjust, he suggests that you use a milder shampoo (that is, not clarifying) at first and gradually ease into skipping days.
