MAKING THE CUT

It’s the season for change and a new haircut is the quickest way to solidify your it-girl status. Sally Hershberger (the celeb stylist credited with taking care of Rene Zellwegger and Kate Moss’s tresses) gives us the scoop on which haircut and products will work on you.

The Bob
A classic cut perfect for women of all ages, Hershberger says the bob works best on normal to thin hair. “Use a shine spray when styling to get incredible shine and smoothness,” says Hershberger.

Curly
Curly hair is often thick and coarse. Hershberger recommends cutting long layers (the shortest shouldn’t be above your chin). Her favourite product to use on textured hair is her primer for wavy hair. “[The primer] will loosen up curls and add shine,” says Hershberger. Using a couple squirts of primer, rake the product through your hair with your hands.

Straight with Bangs
Bangs make a statement and can modernize drab hair in just a few snips. Straight, medium to thick hair is best for a full fringe of bangs like Naomi Campbell’s. “I love this length; I like it hitting right over the brow,” says Hershberger. “I think it’s sexy.” The pro stylist recommends a round brush to loosen up flat-as-a-board bangs without making them too curved.

Long Layers
Whatever you do, don’t call it “The Rachel.” Long layers are making a comeback in a much more sleek and simple way than the flippy ’90s Friends -inspired style. Straight or wavy hair will do for this cut. For a wavy look, Hershberger uses a beach spray. For straight layers, a few drops of serum will tame flyaways and control frizz.

The Shag
Nothing says unique like a shaggy cut á la Katie Holmes. Hershberger describes it as: “a really layered bob with a heavy bang.” Thin hair will benefit from all of the choppy sections that create gorgeous volume. Warm up a few drops of gel between your palms and run your hands through your hair to break it up for a piece-y effect.
