The one question we get asked time and time again is how to find the perfect pair of pants. Our tips take the pain out of the search.
1. Pick your battles.
Pick a less busy time to shop like a weekday morning. The store will be neat and calm, and you’ll have the salespeople’s attention all to yourself.
2. Set off on the right foot.
Get mentally prepared to shop like crazy and try on several pairs of pants. Start off with a healthy breakfast to give you energy.
3. Dress appropriately.
Wear comfortable shoes (no lace-ups!), and clothing that is easy to get in and out of in the change room. Bring the shoes you will wear most often with the pants you’re trying on.
4. Bring a friend.
She’ll give you an honest opinion and be your gofer when you need other sizes.
5. Be patient.
The perfect pant might not show up at the first store.
6. Look for quality.
This is one area where it pays to spend a little more to get a great fit and beautiful fabric.
7. Stick to the mission at hand.
Although you may see a cute handbag, you’re shopping for pants – stay focused! You don’t want to lose steam before your search is successful.
8. Try, try, try!
We wish there was an easy answer to what will look best on you, but the best thing to do is to keep trying on different brands, styles and sizes (one size up and one down from what you think you are) until you find what works best for you.
9. Love ‘em or leave ‘em.
If you aren’t sure, don’t buy them. Or double check the store’s return policy and try them on again at home.
10. If it ain’t broke...
If you’ve found a pair you love, go back and buy them in a few fabrics and colours, as they may not be there again next season. Scout out retailers such as jcrew.com, Banana Republic and Reitmans, which offer the same styles in different fabrics each season.
