No holiday wish list is complete without a piece from Birks and Mayors brand-new signature collection. The 18-karat gold and diamond collection, named Destinee, will be available at Birks locations across Canada, and in Mayors stores throughout the U.S. starting November 1st.
The jeweller’s new look, and its international expansion, can be credited to one woman, Holly Brubach, the brand’s Creative Director since 2003. In addition to witnessing the unveiling of the new collection (and trying on some fabulous pieces, naturally!), Weddingbells also garnered some fascinating insight into the creative process, and how the collection itself came to be.
According to Brubach, in the early design stages she and her team participated in a think-tank of sorts, surrounding themselves with visual inspiration, including advertisements from Birks’ archives, some dating back to the 1920s. Indeed, the original Birks logo from the glamorous flapper-era inspired the use of a “quatrefoil” or four-leaf clover design throughout the collection. Brubach and her design team also focused their attention on a double-B shape, which eventually formed a grid. Another extension of the collection transformed the grid formation into a sphere for a subtle, retro, ’60s feel.
In spite of such historic influences, though, the Destinee collection is thoroughly modern and unique. It’s the perfect design to put Birks on the map (joining other iconic collections such as Birks Signature watch and The Amorique Diamond), or all eyes on the bride as she sparkles down the aisle.
