The steal
There’s something charming about old-school apothecary brands that still use their original recipes. But we’re also grateful that their prices don’t appreciate like storied antiques. Cases in point: J.R. Watkins Calming Bath Soak in Lavender, Menthol Camphor Bath Soak in Lavender, and Body Wash in Aloe & Green Tea ($13 each, jrwatkins.com).
Golden age
Global cosmetic titan L’Oréal is officially a centenarian. The French brand can trace its humble beginnings back to hair dye cooked up in chemist Eugène Schueller’s Parisian apartment. While one of its first products created for the public was a tanning oil (quelle horreur), today the company holds a patent on a sunscreen stabilizer, which speaks to its long-standing relevance.
Talon show
The FASHION staff may squabble over True Blood’s vampires—Bill or Eric?—but we’re all in agreement that slightly macabre nail shades are worthy of our lust.
OPI Nail Lacquer ($11, 800-341-9999) in “Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees”
REVLON Nail Enamel ($6, at drugstores) in “Plum Night”
SALLY HANSEN Insta-Dri Fast Dry Nail Colour ($6, at drugstores) in “Uptempo Plum”
YVES SAINT LAURENT La Laque ($24, at Holt Renfrew) in “Stormy Grey”
Mais oui
It began in 1863 with the first powder blush, which was created for stage actresses. Today, the candy-coloured little pots from coquettish Parisian brand Bourjois (from $10, at select Shoppers Drug Mart stores) are just as coveted. The entire makeup range, new to Canada, is très adorable—just add a Breton striped tee, baguette and cruiser bicycle.
Fashion loves
Yves Rocher 100% Natural Origin Black Creamy Kohl ($16, yvesrocher.ca), because the eyeliner glides effortlessly across our lids (compliments of its blend of vegetable oil and waxes) while its jumbo-crayon chubbiness makes it easy to wield.
Sugar, sugar
Scents meant to embody love and happiness are far from groundbreaking. But what is innovative about The Body Shop Love Etc… (from $24, at The Body Shop) is that it’s created from alcohol made with fairly traded, organic cane sugar. Also noteworthy: Well-established nose Dominique Ropion created the blend of jasmine, vanilla and sandalwood.
