Matter Company's new line takes it outside

Eco-friendly sunscreens, salves and more for the outdoorsy set.

By Jennifer Campbell

My husband decided he wanted to redo our garden, so last weekend saw me shoveling dirt. For hours. I also had a run-in with a prickly raspberry bush and washed soil off of my hands about 7,000 times, so by Sunday, they were dry, scraped and tired. I knew all of this was coming, so I saved myself a tin of Matter Company’s All Heal Salve ($18, mattercompany.com), part of the Toronto-based company’s new outdoor line, Matter: Outdoors. The line-up also includes an SPF 30 sunscreen, a shea butter-rich lip balm, and a Biodegradable Bodywash/Shampoo.

The salve is formulated to treat hands, elbows and heels to some all-natural love. It’s packed with tea tree and lavender oils, both thought to have healing properties, burdock root for chapping, anti-inflammatory chickweed to sooth irritation and beeswax to create a protective barrier. The number one ingredient in the ointment is super-moisturizing olive oil and it takes a while to soak in, so give yourself a bit of time before you touch your keyboard or pick up the phone (my husband’s flew right out of his hand). I’ve been applying like crazy and my hands feel much less like sandpaper, which leaves me without an excuse not tackle the front yard.
