However, Vanessa did raise a good point about being more aware of how and on what you're spending your money. So let's move beyond just the cost-per-wear of clothing and look at other ways to save some cash. I'll admit, part of it is as a result of my recent, "Oh my god, I'm never going to be able to pay my mortgage!" emotional freakout. (For the record, I did do my financial due diligence before purchasing - this was just first time home-buyer nerves). But I have been thinking of ways I can cut down on my expenses apart from bringing my lunch into work.
1. Fashion and decor magazines. Oh, how I love the glossy mags but after buying Flare, Allure, Fashion Magazine, Elle UK, Lucky and Vogue UK I've spent approximately $50-$60 a month. Yikes!
I still want (need) to read those magazines so I've dusted off my library card and gone in for a couple hours to flip through the new issues. This also applies to books, of course.
2. If you're a Lifestyle reader then you've probably read our articles on coupons. I love save.ca and other deal sites. You sign up, click your coupon choice and save a loonie or two on your next purchase. If you have a Visa card you can use Visa perks. BUT and this is a big but, do not buy stuff you don't usually buy or use your Visa if you do not have the money to immediately pay it off. We're all supposed to be saving money.
3. Consignment, thrift and vintage stores. If you have to shop, why not try consignment stores? If you don't mind the concept of used clothing (dry clean them or handwash them before wearing), take a couple hours and head out with your list and hit the shops. You might find your wish list item for a song. On the other hand, you can take your unwanted items to the stores and get a little cash.
4. Automatic debit: No, not using and abusing your debit card, but the "pay yourself first system." Look at your budget. Is there extra cash that you won't miss? If you do have the cash, arrange for your bank or your company if they do so to take the money out before you get your paycheque. You can't miss or spend it if you don't see it plus you build up your nest egg.
What's your trick to save some cash? Share it with us!
