My friend knows of what she speaks. She has two vaginas.
In fact, just like Williams, she has two of everything -- two vaginas, two uteri, and two cervixes. This rare disorder is called a 'bicornuate uterus' and affects an estimated two in a million.
From the outside, my friend tells me, things down there look pretty much in order. There is only one way in but her vaginal canal is divided by a septum (much like the wall separating your nostrils.) From there, each vaginal canal leads to its own individual cervix and uterus.
Her doctor discovered the condition when she was 15 and had trouble inserting a tampon because it kept hitting the wall between the two vaginas (now, she has to wear one on each side, she's the tampon industry's dream customer). 'The doctor told me she didn't know if I'd be able to have babies,' my friend recalls. 'I was devastated. That's a tough thing to hear at age 15.'
This was one of the reasons Williams decided to have the surgery. She wanted kids and her doctor told her that, left untreated, her condition would increase the risk of miscarriage.
However, in my friend's case, her gynecologist decided that, despite this risk, removing the septum between her two vaginas would cause too much scar tissue possibly further complicating childbirth.
Bless her two beautiful sons for that. Both were delivered by cesarean, as vaginal delivery would have been impossible due to the narrowness of the vaginal canal.
Now, despite a few major - 'the stress of making it to full term when I was pregnant' -- and minor inconveniences -- the fact that every time she goes for a check up, the doctor calls in an army interns to get a first hand view of this rare condition - my friend is now pretty chuffed about her lady bits.
Because the risk of surgery and the resulting scar tissue aren't the only reason my friend questions Williams' decision to have the wall separating her two vaginas removed.
'The vagina I was using was half the size of a normal one,' Williams said in interviews. You do the math. Not only does this mean a snugger fit for my friend's guy, 'What other guy can have sex with two vaginas and remain monogamous,' he laughs.
