One of my vices as I drive my kid to daycare in the morning is rockin' out! I've been known to turn up the volume on the car stereo, so that my kid and I can sing along and get down to the tunes.
Toddler tunes, that is.
So instead of listening to news, current affairs, traffic reports or music a little more appropriate for me, we'll bop our heads to "Old McDonald" and "Polly Put the Kettle On" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and other tracks. The familiar ditties sung by kids are perfect for little ears and have the power to soothe him.
I'm not sure if it's the music itself that is so alluring or the joy I get out of our shared listening experience. There's no need for explaining why it's fun. It just is.
And there have been more than a few times after having dropped him off when I don't replace the toddler CD for one of my own. In fact, sometimes I don't fiddle with the FM dial to find the jazz, rock or news stations because I'm on to the next track on the disc, sometimes with the volume cranked to 11.
Actually, my partner knows this little ridiculous detail about me because the car stereo often has one of his toddler CDs in the deck just waiting for somebody to press play. And oftentimes, I've left the stereo on with the volume at a shockingly high level.
I find ?Old McDonald? sounds better when it?s loud.
