Understanding Your Public Library

Your public library is a fabulous free resource that will help you expose your children to the world of books, imagination and learning, all while developing literacy skills.

By TVOParents.com

The public library is free and a great place to find information, borrow videos, CDs, DVDs, audio tapes, magazines and books as well as a place where you can have computer access.

To use the services of the library, you need to get a library card, which the librarian will prepare for you, once you show some identification that shows your name and address such as a driver's license or immigration documents along with a bank statement or utility bill.

When you take out books, the librarian will give you a due date for the books. The due date is the date by which you must return items to the library. Don't forget or you'll have to pay a small fine.

Libraries also offer story-telling for children - it's free but it's very popular so you might have to register ahead of time with a librarian. Look for flyers that let you know the date and time of story-telling.

Most libraries also have summer reading programs or clubs for kids. Kids sign up and read a certain number of books all summer. This will keep them ready for school in September.

Get to know your librarians, they not only know how and where to find specific books, they can also suggest books on certain topics. Librarians can also teach you how to search the library catalogues on the computers.

Libraries also have information on how to prepare a resume, find information on jobs and trades, and learn about interview skills. Look in the Careers section of the library.

In addition, libraries have CDs, DVDs and audio tapes in other languages resources to help you improve your English. There are also classes you can take to help you learn about the internet and how to use it.
