What do television ratings mean?

Since 1997, Canadian broadcasters have been rating the programs they put on air. Since 2001, television shows and movies have been encoded with a rating so parents can use technology to block unsuitable shows.

What do the ratings mean?

  • Rated E: Exempt
Exempt programming includes news, sports, some information-based talk shows and documentaries. This doesn't mean that it's okay to let the kids watch because some news programming can be very frightening for small children. Use your own discretion.
  • Rated C: Children
This rating is given to programming intended for kids under the age of 8. Shows with this rating will not depict realistic violence or aggression or anything else that might frighten a child or threaten their well-being. Nudity, sexual situations and offensive language are not allowed under this rating.
  • Rated C8: Children over 8
This rating is given to programming that is considered safe for kids between 8 and 12 to watch on their own. However, since some mild violence, special effects, comedic horror and mild animated violence are allowed under this rating, it is strongly recommended that parents watch these shows with their children. Also, although profanity (swearing) is not allowed, some language might be considered socially offensive. There is no nudity or sexuality allowed under this rating.
  • Rated G: General
This rating is given to programming that is considered suitable for all age groups and good family viewing. Although it is not geared towards children it is understood that kids will be watching so there is no realistic violence or frightening special effects allowed. There is no offensive slang, swearing or nudity allowed under this rating.
  • Rated PG: Parental Guidance
Although this programming is considered good for a general audience, it might not be suitable for kids under eight. It also might not be suitable for kids 8-13 to watch by themselves. Some of the storylines and themes might be controversial or moderately violent. Some swearing, suggestive language and brief nudity is allowed under this rating.
  • Rated 14+: Over 14 years
This rating is given to programming that may not be suitable for kids under 14 years old. Intense violence, swearing, nudity and sexual situations are allowed under this rating.
  • Rated 18+: Adults
This is programming for adults 18 or over. Explicit sex, graphic violence, swearing and offensive language are all allowed under this rating.
