If you've got an art enthusiast at your house, you've probably got art supplies galore tucked away in cupboards and bins—paints, glues, modeling clay, and other assorted bits and pieces. But are those art supplies actually kid-friendly? Maybe, maybe not. Here are some important tips to keep in mind when you're choosing art supplies for your child.
Steer clear of dusts or powders that can be inhaled or rubbed in your child's eyes. Choose liquid rather than powered paints and oil pastels rather than chalk and avoid any instant paper maché products that come in powered form.
Avoid products that contain solvents, acids, alkalis, bleaches, or irritating or corrosive chemicals (e.g. felt-tipped markers, spray paints, solvent-based glues, and rubber cement).
Keep an eye on the "found objects" that find their way into the art supply cupboard. While these kinds of treasures can provide a lot of creative inspiration, it's important to ensure that your child isn't scooping up objects that could have sharp edges or otherwise be unsafe.
