Your Perfect Party

How to throw your best fete, whether it be a modern and minimal event or a rich and decadent celebration.

Planning a wedding is a great way to show off your personality both as individuals and as a couple. In her new book, Fête: The Wedding Experience (Steward, Tabori & Chang, 2008), New York-based event planner Jung Lee talks about the importance of placing personal elements throughout your celebration. “Weddings are an awesome opportunity to show off your personality because you have the perfect audience,” explains Lee. To help you personalize your party, Lee offers these three bits of advice:

1. It’s all about creating an experience. Yes, there may be traditional etiquette rules – but since when do you care about the rules? Remember, you’re creating this journey for you and your family and friends to experience together. What do you want people to remember about your big day? Think about the end result of the day and plan backwards.

2. Think things through carefully. Lee says one of the biggest mistakes couples make is rushing to check tasks off their wedding planning checklists. Slow it down a bit. Understand how the elements of your party will affect each other. “This a really special and unique time in your life,” says Lee. “It shouldn’t be a chore.”

3. Focus on all the elements. Visual spectacles are great but your focus shouldn’t be merely on the look of your big day. Think about your guests and allow them to actually see, hear and taste the experience. It’s the little surprises, those fun elements that could only come from you, that will make your day unique.
