Halloween is fast approaching and your kids may already be clamouring for costumes and candy. If you’ve left it all to the last ghoulish minute, don’t panic—divine.ca has your guide to pulling Halloween costumes out of your closets and cupboards before you can say “boo”.
For this you’ll need old sweat clothes, like a baggy sweater and pants, plus pom poms, a colourful wig or hat, and of course, a big red clown nose. Attach the pom poms to the sweatshirt, and give your kids red cheeks with cream blush. You can also pad the costume with wads of tissue paper. An umbrella and a bicycle horn are nice touches, but you’ll probably want to forego the unicycle. If you don’t have time to pick up a nose, use bright red lipstick and draw one on.
The tourist
Send out your kids in tacky printed shirts, socks with sandals (weather permitting), shorts or pants. Don’t forget the canvas or straw hats, cameras, maps, and tote bags. Sunglasses repaired with masking tape are a nice touch, but shouldn’t be worn once it gets dark. Give your kids real, disposable cameras so they can photograph themselves and their friends.
Hairspray!
If you and your kids loved the movie musical, then why not take inspiration from 1960s go-go dancers and girl groups? This is a good choice for young girls, who will love the vintage look of minidresses, boots, and high, high hair. If you have time, drop by a second-hand clothing shop and pick out a vintage dress and purse—think shiny, plastic, fantastic. Hair can be pinned up in a neat chignon, or worn straight and loose. For older girls, don’t forget the liquid eyeliner and pale pink lips for a retro look.
Short-sleeved, buttoned-down white or plaid shirts, pocket holders bursting with pens, rulers, and calculators, pants hiked up to the waist, fanny packs, knee-length white socks, slicked-back hair…it’s nerd chic. Don’t forget the black-rimmed glasses repaired with Scotch tape—pop out the lenses from a pair of cheap sunglasses, and pray all this inspires your kid to become the next Bill Gates…
Miss Teen Canada—and gracious runner-up
Put your little girl in her fanciest party dress, adding frills and ruffles if you have time. Add a pair of white gloves and a tiara (we always have one lying around the house, but if you don’t, pick one up at a costume shop). Plastic jewels are a nice touch, as is a ribbon banner with “Miss Teen Canada” written in glitter. The runner-up gets the same look, minus the tiara and banner, of course, but we bet they’ll both get the same amount of candy.
