Earth Day Action Plan for Preteens

Making a Difference for the Planet

By Ann Douglas

So your preteen is seriously freaked out about climate change. Why not mark Earth Day (April 22) by helping her to translate that worry into action? Here are five powerful ways you can help her to make a difference for the Planet.

- Visit the Earth Day Canada website (www.earthday.ca) to find out what types of Earth Day activities are taking place in your neighbourhood. While you're there, read up on the top 10 things you can do to help the environment today.

- Take the Earth Day Network's Ecological Footprint Quiz (www.earthday.net/footprint/). Find out what kind of footprint your family is leaving on the Planet.

- Visit the EcoSchools section of the Toronto Public Health's 20/20 website (www.toronto.ca/health/2020/ecoschools.htm). See if your school is registered for the 20/20 program.

- Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, expressing concern about the environment. Be sure to send copies of your letter to your mayor, your M.P., and your M.P.P.

- Come up with a list of other actions you can take on the environmental front and then share this list with your friends. You may inspire them to take action, too.
