Does your head start spinning the moment you step inside a toy store? The sheer number of choices can be overwhelming. If you're not sure how to tell the difference between a toy that will be enjoyed for years to come and one that will be tossed aside within a few minutes of being opened, consider these tips from Stevanne Auerbach, Ph.D., author of Dr. Toy's Smart Play:
- Look for a product that is appropriate for you child today and that will hold your child's interest as he or she grows.
- Choose products that are safe, non-toxic, and durable.
- Select products that offer some sort of warranty or guarantee.
- Choose products that have lasting play value and that will stimulate creativity, self-esteem, gross and fine motor skills, and so on.
- Purchase products that will challenge but not frustrate the child.
- Choose toys that your child will find fun. After all, isn't that what toys are all about?
