Backyard Safety

You’ve childproofed your home, but what about your backyard? Here are some tips on making your child’s outdoor environment as safe as possible.

By Ann Douglas
  • Eliminate any hazards that you spot in your backyard: lawnmowers, wading pools, playground equipment that is in need of replacement or repair, poisonous plants (including toadstools and wild mushrooms), animal feces, sticks, rocks, and so on.
  • If there’s a pool in your backyard or your next door neighbour’s backyard, make sure that the fence enclosing the pool isn’t climbable by a young child and that there aren’t any gaps under the fence.
  • Keep your children out of the garage. Not only is there the risk of being injured by a manual or automatic garage door: there are all kinds of other hazards—power tools, gasoline, poisonous substances, hobby supplies, old appliances, and unlocked motor vehicles. The garage should not be a play area.
