Crafty gift alternatives
If your kids are crafty, help them create a homemade gift with these two original, easy-to-do suggestions.
Black and white tie collage
What you’ll need:
▪ Approximately 10 pictures of your child and his or her father
▪ Photocopier or scanner and printer
▪ Scissors
▪ 8 ½” X 11” piece of construction paper
▪ Pencil
▪ Ruler
▪ Marker
▪ Glue
Instructions:
1. Make black and white photocopies of the pictures (this will allow you to keep the originals intact) either with a photocopier, or by scanning them into your computer and then printing them.
2. On the construction paper, draw a tie-shaped figure using the ruler and pencil. Make sure that the figure covers as much of the construction paper’s surface as possible. The shape can be easily achieved by first drawing an upside down triangle, and then adding an adjoining lozenge underneath.
3. Try different ways of placing the copied pictures within the tie shape so that it is completely filled up. Feel free to cut the copies of the pictures so that they fit neatly within the lines.
4. Once you’ve decided exactly how to place the pictures, glue them in place on the construction paper.
5. Using the marker, re-draw the outline of the tie. You can also add embellishments like polka dots or stripes to small gaps between pictures. Another idea is to use different coloured markers to add messages or words onto the pictures.
6. Once the collage is complete, the kids may choose to add a message to their father outside the tie-shape and use the finished product as a card.
Crafty pencil holder
What you’ll need:
▪ Inexpensive plastic cup
▪ Swatches of fabric
▪ Sewing scissors
▪ Fabric glue
Instructions:
1. Choose different swatches of fabric (preferably from old men’s pants or suits), making sure that the colours don’t clash. We recommend using no more than two different patterns. For example, swatches from an old pinstripe suit and an old pair of jeans work well together.
2. Cut up the swatches into irregular shapes.
3. Using the glue, stick the swatches on the plastic cup, alternating between patterns, until the entire cup is covered.
