Manual Mania
‘Tis the season to be flooded with instruction manuals and sales receipts. The question is what to do with them?
Here are some tips on storing manuals and receipts so that you can find them when you need them.
Sales receipts
- File sales receipts according to the method of payment. If you paid for a particular item using a major credit card, staple the receipt to your credit card statement and then file the statement with the rest of your financial records.
- If the purchase was a gift, file the sales receipt in a file folder marked “gifts” or staple the receipt to the inside cover of the instruction manual that accompanied the item.
Instruction manuals
- Store all your instruction manuals in a particular spot in your house: in your filing cabinet; on a bookshelf; in a series of plastic pockets in a large, three-ring binder; or in a desk drawer.
- Resist the temptation to store the manual in the box the product came in. Chances are you’ll end up misplacing the instruction manual when you decide to get rid of the box—something that could have you hitting the panic button the next time you need to reprogramme your VCR!
